April 2017 Newsletter No 100

It was a pleasant surprise to see so many Members attend the April meeting as it was the AGM and, as there were no new Members to welcome,  Brian said that we would press on with the business in hand.   Brian read out the April 2016 Newsletter which was a record of what took place at last year's AGM and asked Members if they agreed with what was relayed.   There was a  show of hands accepting the report.

Our Chairman, Brian said the Secretary would cover last year's events in his report, but going forward we have a full diary of evening runs, lunches, monthly quizzes and speakers.

He thanked the Committee for their work behind the scenes and also Club Members who had arranged the evening run etc and those who had supported all the organised events.  If anyone had suggestions for talks or would like to organise a functions then let the Committee know.

The issue of a Club Constitution and Rules was raised during the year and one is now in the process of being drafted and will be available for Members consultation in the near future.

Thanks were expressed to all Members who were involved in the 2016 Cotswold Caper which raised £5,038.00 for Gloucestershire Young Carers.   The 2017 Caper is progressing well, the route is a magnificent tour of the Cotswolds starting and returning to the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester.  Members were reminded that the date for the run was the 25th June and if not helping they would be most welcome to come along and give their support.

Brian then handed over to Sue, the Treasurer for her report.    Members had the chance of looking at the accounts on the website before the meeting but Sue said she had a few hard copies should anyone wish to study them further.  At the 31st March 2017 there were 55 Members cars.   Mo and her ladies had increased the money taken for the raffle by £95.85 on 2016.  Members clapped to show their appreciation.  The website was still paying for itself and is an important part of the Club.  Myn had kindly offered to check the accounts this year in place of Eddy.

Brian asked that the accounts be adopted pending audit and there was a show of hands as acceptance.

It was then over to our Secretary, Adrian for his report in which he said it had been a great year starting with the away weekend in Bournemouth, followed by St Roses Wheel Nuts Show and Geoff and Mandy's evening run.  Terry Heighway and Keith Lewis organised the May and June runs.

July was the Cotswold Caper raising a record amount of £5038, the total being raised in the 11 years since it was started was £40,000.  There was also the Teddy Bear's Picnic and John and Tony's run.

August was the annual visit to South Cerney Steam Fair,  Brian and Teresa's evening run and a talk on the Purton Hulks followed by a visit to see them in September with lunch organised by Laurence and Jane.  The last evening run of the year was organised by Andy Jarrett.

Gethin took us on a trip to the Abingdon museum in October finishing with lunch at a local public house and for the first time we had a lunch time 'Social Event' courtesy of Keith and Wendy.  There was also the Sunday lunches organised by various Members and the Christmas Party held at the Lilley Brook Golf Club arranged by Dave and Liz.

Another successful year thanks to the efforts of certain individuals and the Club is grateful for their efforts. 

Adrian thanked everyone who had contributed to making the Club a success.

To round off his report he said that he had been Secretary to the Club for eight years and during his tenure had seen the Caper become a leading MG run.  The Club had grown in numbers and had developed a friendly atmosphere where all were welcome and he prided himself that he had been able to help in the process.  He pointed out that he had run the website which was self funding.

He also mentioned that he had organised trips to Prague, France and many MG runs in the UK, but being in Bournemouth had made him rethink his role and felt that it was now the time for him to hand over the reins to new blood with new ideas.  He would support Laurence who had agreed to take over the role as Secretary, but he would continue to be Webmaster.

He believed that a change would help the Club move on with new people and new ideas.  Adrian thanked everyone for their help over the years and he looks forward to coming to the Club without the pressure of a five hour round trip.

Brian asked Adrian if there had been any nominations from Members to take on any of the offices but no one had come forward.  He then explained that there were six Committee Members, himself (Brian) Chairman, Sue Panter Treasurer, Laurence Gulliford taking over as Secretary, Adrian Mullins Webmaster, Trevor Panter who leads on the Caper and technical issues and Jane Gulliford on club clothing and regalia.
As there were no nominations Brian said that the Committee were willing to stand for another term and suggested that they be re-elected en bloc.  Rob Cotterill proposed re-election of the Committee which was seconded by Steve Wood.  All Members agreed.

Brian said that he had been on the Committee for eight years and Sue had been Treasurer for fourteen and were both willing to stand down next  year should anyone wish to take on their roles.

Gethin proposed that Adrian become a Life Member which was seconded by Louise, so the motion was carried.

The AGM was officially closed at 8.30 pm.

Brian welcomed Members to the 'normal meeting' saying that the finances were looking good and that as Laurence our newly appointed Secretary was away Adrian would act as Assistant Secretary.

Rob and Myn were organising the first run of the season on the 25th April starting from the Whaddon layby at 6pm and Geoff and Mandy's run on the 23rd May would start from Prinknash Abbey car park also at 6pm. 

St Roses Wheel Nuts Show on the 7th May was not well supported this year as it con-incided with the Caper Rehearsal.  Adrian said that at the last Committee Meeting we had discussed what numbers constituted a Club Event and it was decided that five cars or more could fly under the banner of the Club, anything less than five then it  would  be a personal event.  Several Members had indicated that they had put their names down for St Roses and a hand count was taken, making a total of seven.  Adrian will liaise with Laurence to see if we can get our usual pitch at St Roses.

The closing date for entry to the Stroud Vintage Transport & Engine Show at South Cerney  on the 6th August is very soon so Members will have to be quick getting their names to Adrian so as not to be disappointed.

Trev had only one response to the Balloon Fiesta on the 20th May at Cotswold Airport Kemble.

Brian had received an email from Kate James inviting the Club to Aldsworth Village Fete on the 1st July when the theme this year would be 'Outlaws', can only assume it refers to the Wild West!    Jane had met Geoff Phillips an ex Member of the Club who had been to the fete a couple of years ago and he had said it was a fantastic event.

The Caper was progressing well with 150 entrants which is a new record for this time of the year.

The business part of the evening over and everyone recharged their glasses and bought raffle tickets before reconvening for the quiz.

Keith gave us a varied quiz of thirty questions on General Knowledge, Music, Military and of course Motoring and I think we probably all learnt something from it.  One question - how many teeth does a mosquito have - Keith gave us three options and the answer was 47 which was a surprise.

Two teams had eighteen correct answers so there was a tie break between Brian and Teresa and Terry and Liz and the winners were Terry and Liz.

March 2017 Newsletter No 99

Brian welcomed Members to the meeting including one prospective new member John Collins, who informed us he had an MGB Roadster. Trev immediately warmed to this news. Brian also took the opportunity to remind members of the tools that the club owns and displayed the inventory prepared by Trev. These are available for members to use free of charge.

The first half of the evening was devoted to a presentation by Linda Diggory from the Willow Trust, our chosen charity for this year’s Cotswold Caper. Linda explained that the Trust was established in 1989 and that it operates both its fully equipped purpose-built boats Leonard Matchan and Spirit of Freedom II from Saul Junction. The boats are designed to provide access for all – whatever their disability – however profound, from April to October. The Trust is self-funding and does not charge their guests for the trip. It is estimated to cost around £15 per guest to come on board and roughly £450 to take one of the boats out for the day.

Each boat has a professionally trained Willow Trust skipper and a crew of three or four volunteers from a pool of 90 people. After departing from Saul the trip normally goes down to Purton, where they stop for a break and to allow their guests to get off the boat if they wish. They then return to Saul, getting back some time around 3pm.

Linda showed us a number of photos of guests on the boat and it was clear they all had a wonderful time on board with a chance to enjoy some freedom from their normal environment. Last year they had over 400 groups on board and from the list of charities they deal with, a number of them are also charities we have supported on previous Capers.

 It was also mentioned that the Trust run a Cream Tea Cruise one Saturday each month during their operating season. This is for members of the public who wouldn’t otherwise qualify to come on board. It was felt this might well be something the club could put on the diary for next year.

Brian thanked Linda for a very informative talk and we then took a break.

After the break, the raffle was then held with a number of prizes on offer.

Sue unfortunately could not attend the meeting as she was ill, so the top table was just inhabited by Brian & Laurence, standing in for Adrian.

Geoff Bartlett circulated the menu for the Sunday Lunch on 19th March at the Red Heart, Blaisdon - arrival 12.30 for a 1pm sit down.

The Wheel Nuts event at St. Roses on Sunday 7th May was mentioned, but unfortunately this clashes with the Cotswold Caper Rehearsal run for the marshalls on the day. We only have 2 names so far for St. Roses – John Child and Rob Cotterill.

Laurence asked if there were any additions to the list of those wanting to go to The Annual Vintage Transport show at South Cerney on Sunday 6th August, with 1 name added after the meeting.

He then asked if there were any more people wanting to go to the Tetbury Car Show on Sunday 3rd September, but there were no further additions.

In Ken Coyles’ absence, Laurence read out details of the Highnam Motor Show on 10th & 11th June, which Ken is keen to attend and that he had secured some free passes to the event.

Members were also reminded about the recent email regarding the Find it, Fix it, Flog it programme looking for possible members interested in taking part.

John and Tony Child asked if their run could be brought forward a week from 22nd to 15th August to avoid a clash.

Brian reminded members that the next meeting is the AGM and asked for any nominations for new Committee members beforehand. Myn volunteered to look at the accounts ahead of the meeting.

Also Rob Cotterill mentioned that he & Myn will be organising the first evening run of the year on Tuesday 25th April.

Gethin left little slips of paper on some chairs advertising his “Cotswold Canter” on Tue 27th June – a “25 mile Cruise in the Cotswolds” starting at Severn Springs at 6:30 pm. Menu to follow.

Also there was Info from Trev about a  Balloon Fiesta at Cotswold Airport – Kemble on Sat 20th May £5 entry from noon onwards – Classic Cars and Balloons.

The meeting closed at 10pm.

February 2017 Newsletter No 98

Brian welcomed Members to the February meeting stating that it was an excellent turnout.  He also welcomed Tony and Misty Burton who had come along and joined before the meeting  and Dave Duberley and Martin Smith who were with us in January but had now become Members.

Before the business part of the meeting Brian introduced Paul Barnett our speaker who was surprised that so many MG owners had come out on a damp night, little did he know that the majority of us had brought along our tin tops!

All Members were looking forward to Paul's  presentation on the Slapton Sands Tragedy and they were not disappointed.  Although his favourite subject is the Purton Hulks he gave an enthusiastic and informative talk on Exercise Tiger which was practice for the D Day Landings due to take place in June 1944.   As before, Paul exceeded his allotted time but there were no complaints as he held our attention into the shortcomings which resulted in the loss of so many American lives.

Time was given for questions and answers before Brian asked Members to show their appreciation.  No doubt we will be seeing Paul at some time in the future to hear another of his many talks.

Whilst Members recharged their glasses Mo and Carol did the usual raffle.

After 10 minutes Adrian reconvened the meeting explaining that Brian had had to go home due to family business.

Alastair and Louise's Sunday lunch on the 19th February at the Butchers Arms Sheepscombe was almost full, only two places left.  We were asked to  meet at midday for a 12.15pm sit down.

Ken and Phil would be organising a full days run over the border in Hereford on the 9th July and details would be given to Adrian to put onto the website.

Geoff had booked the Red Hart Inn at Blaisdon for the March Sunday lunch on the 19th and the menu was passed around.  A request was made that those attending should pay Geoff for their meal in full at the March meeting as the Red Hart had requested payment up front.  Do they not trust MG Owners!!!

Adrian ran through a list of external events which we had supported in the past and for which he required names.  The events are St Roses Wheelnuts Show on the 7th May, South Cerney Steam Fair on the 6th August and Tetbury Classic Car Show on the 3rd September.   The Potteries and South Cheshire run on the 3rd September will be there last run and places are limited.

Due to the very successful social day in 2016 which was organised by Keith and Wendy they offered to host another this year.  The date is the 1st October which gives Members plenty of warning to keep the date free. 

For the benefit of the new Members,  Adrian gave precise of the Cotswold Caper before  saying that we already had 111 entries which was 3 more than February 2016 and 121 cream teas had been booked.  Rob thought that the scones would be stale well before June when they were required.

As Laurence was wearing his new Glos MG sweatshirt he gave us a couple of twirls just in case other Members wished to place an order for one.

The winner of the Caption Contest was Janet who was not present but her wine was sent home in very good hands (mine)!!!!!!

January 2017 Newsletter No 97

With reports of the weather not being good and with a lot of  bugs around it was a pleasant surprise to see so many Members at the first meeting of the New Year.  Brian welcomed Chris Helps who had been a Member since August 2015 but it was the first time he had managed to make a meeting, hopefully this would be the first of many.  Dave, Teresa and Martin were also welcomed as prospective new Members. 

Brian said that we would attend to the business side of the meeting first before Steve's quiz which would take us all around Gloucestershire.  He also said that the last time the Members were together was at the Lilleybrook Golf Club for the Xmas meal which was as usual very good and that we had to thank Liz and Dave for this who had the job for life now.   The Golf Club had already been booked for 9th December 2017 and there was no excuse not to come as fair warning had been given.

The Club funds were still solvent so it would soon be time for another 'big' party.

At this point the microphone was handed to Laurence, acting as Secretary, who asked for a volunteer to organise the Sunday lunch on the 19th March.  Unfortunately there were no takers.

Paul Barnett who gave us a talk on the Purton Hulks would once again in February be enthralling us with his presentation on the Slapton Sands.   We had a visit to the Purton Hulks after Paul's talk and one of the Members suggested that perhaps an MG outing to the Slapton Sands would be of interest!!

Louise and Alastair would be organising the Sunday lunch on the 19th February at the Butchers Arms,  Sheepscombe.

Although it was almost seven months away Laurence asked who of the Members would like to attend the South Cerney Steam Show on the 6th August, the organisers of the event like to know well in advance so that they can plan the parking areas.   Seven Members plus partners showed an interest, but as some of the stalwarts of the Club were not in attendance Laurence would ask again at the February meeting.

Laurence and Jane are organising a July visit to Thatcher's Cider in Somerset where we will have a two hour tour and cider tasting followed by lunch in Thatcher's restaurant.  The date chosen is the 8th July which will be on the website.

There are seventy entries already for the Caper plus seventy five cream teas booked.
The judging of the Caption Contest will be left for another month as more funny comments are required so Members were asked to put their thinking caps on and send in a few more entries.

With the formal part of the meeting over Brian said it was time for the raffle and to recharge our glasses.   Marion and Jane offered to do the raffle as Mo was not at the meeting due to having picked up one of the nasty bugs over Christmas and Carol was also away.

Members got into teams ready for Steve's quiz which was 25 questions on Gloucestershire.  It was a brilliant quiz, even I could answer a lot of the questions which was amazing,  and the winners were Jane & Laurence with 20 correct.  Many thanks to Steve.

Brian closed the meeting at 9.15pm


November 2016 Newsletter No 96

Brian welcomed Members to the last meeting of 2016 as there would not be one in December as it was our Christmas Bash at the Littlebrook Golf Club organised by Dave and Liz.   It was good to see Eddie and John at the meeting.   Brian then handed over to Adrian to run through the list of up and coming internal events.

On the 27th November Geoff had arranged Sunday lunch at the High Orchard Gloucester, he asked for numbers but said that we could order the food on arrival which would be 12.00 for 12.30pm.

Members were asked to pay for their Christmas meal, which is on the 10th December,  up front with the last date for booking with Dave and Liz  being the 1st December.  Members were asked to bring wrapped raffle prizes on the day and Dave would willing collect the prizes from their cars and carry them to the room which had been allocated to us in the golf club.

Adrian said that the diary for 2017 was fairly well sorted with Steve doing a quiz for the January meeting.  The only two dates which were not filled were the March and October Sunday lunches.

Sue and Trev would be arranging the first Sunday lunch of the new year on the 22nd January at the Tudor Arms  Slimbridge.    Adrian would be given the menu to put on the web site towards the end of December.

Trev informed Members that the Caper was well underway and that he and Paul had been round the route and it was all looking promising.  There were 20 entries so far and Members were asked to start thinking about obtaining advertisements and donations.

The 'Caption Contest' was won by Martin and Adrian presented him with a bottle of wine.  Well done Martin for keeping the wine away from Brian and Gethin.

The funds were still solvent and we were able to once again pay the Gala Club for the hire of the room.

Brian had been approached via email by Peter McNeile inviting the Club to Andoversford Races,  which is a 'point to point',  on the 9th April 2017.   He could provide a Sunday lunch package or we could take our own picnic with the racing starting at 2pm.   The cost if we had over 10 cars would be about £5.00 to £6.00.  Peter did say that he could promote our Club and arrange for our cars to be paraded.   There was very little response from Members but Brian did say that if anyone had second thoughts they could contact him for more information.

For those Members who did not attend the social event put on by Keith and Wendy on the 16th October they missed a really good afternoon.  Keith arranged a super run from Painswick and Wendy did us proud with  curry,  chilli, pulled pork etc  and also her delicious puds.    Several Members had seconds!!!!  Our thanks to them both.

With the business side of the meeting out of the way Brian wished all those Members who would not be at the Xmas Meal a very Happy Christmas and New year.  It was time for the raffle and back to the Christmas Shopping where there were many interesting items from the Willow Trust (our Charity for 2017),  jewellery from Julie and Paul with his pots, plus a few items of auto jumble.



October 2016 Newsletter No 95

Brian opened the meeting by welcoming Andrew Riga who has an MGTD and introducing Pat Furley who would be presenting his History of Films and Moving Pictures before the business part of the meeting.

Pat thanked the Club for inviting him along and before showing the films he gave us a short history on the early films which date way back to 1825.  The first films were cartoons, one of them being Mickey Mouse after which there were the animation and people mix of films.  Pat had spliced together these very old black and whites and it was time for lights out so that we could have a film show.  Unfortunately we had forgotten to organise ice cream or popcorn so there were a few groans from the Members.   We watched a selection of Mickey Mouse and then Popeye,  which was one of the animation and people in films of which Pat had spoken.  The Laurel and Hardy film which was called 'Ghost' caused great amusement . 

The first moving pictures in 1860 were hand painted on glass and Pat had examples of  these plates which were amazing.

Brian thanked Pat for his very entertaining and informative presentation.

It was good to see Jan and Keith Masters at the meeting, they have been Members for years but emigrated to Wales so it is not often that they are able to join us. 

After the raffle the meeting was re-convened and Brian said that we would go rapidly through the items on the agenda.

He thanked Andy Jarrett in his absence for the excellent last evening run of the year although unfortunately it was not well attended.  Gethin was also thanked for organising the educational trip to Abingdon and the lunch afterwards,  he had also managed to arrange good weather.

Tim and Louise had booked the Hunters Inn at Longdon for the 23rd October which is the first Sunday lunch of the winter season and asked for Members to select their choice of menu.  They would meet at 12.30pm for 1pm.

The main event of the business side of the meeting was the selection of the Charity for the 2017 Caper and Teresa and Laurence were asked to give a short precise of their chosen Charity.  Laurence said that both charities were a very deserving cause.  David had difficulty in choosing which one to support and suggested that we split the proceeds between the two, but was informed that it would cause problems putting two charities on the raffle tickets and also having two attending on the day of the Caper.

Brian counted the votes for both and with the electronic votes which Adrian had passed to Laurence,  the Willow Trust had 32 and the Butterfly Garden 13, so the Charity for 2017 by an overall majority was The Willow Trust.

Adrian had asked Laurence to bring to the attention of the Members an email which he had circulated from MGOC in respect of a proposal by HM Government to exempt more historic vehicles from the roadworthiness test.  MGOC were asking for feedback  on Members views.

The first Caper meeting would be on the 15th October and 9 entries had already been received.

Jane has made enquiries with our clothing supplier to see if they could provide long sleeved cotton shirts as one of our Members had requested this.

Keith mentioned that at our social event on Sunday he and Wendy would be holding a raffle and could Members bring along raffle prizes.  

Ken Coyle one of our newest Members had in the past  organised runs for the Herefordshire Club and he had asked if we would be interested in a Sunday run with lunch in this area.   Members were in full agreement and Ken would be asked to arrange a run in the new year.

Laurence asked for a show of hands for a visit to Thatcher's Cider Brewery, which is near Weston, with lunch in their restaurant.  He suggested that we should have a minibus picking us up from our homes so that we could all take advantage of the cider sampling.  There was also a good show of hands for this outing.

Dave and Liz who are organising the Christmas Bash asked for Members who had booked to bring along their £22.00  in cash to the November meeting.  Dave also asked for raffle prizes for the evening stating that they should be wrapped.  If everything goes well Dave has volunteered him and Liz to arrange the 2017 Christmas meal!!!!

The Committee are conscious that if a speaker or quiz has not been organised the meetings finish after about 30mins.   Brian asked Members for feed back over the next few months about possible talks they would like to hear.  A couple of speakers have already been arranged for 2017 and two Members have produced quizzes.

The meeting closed at 10pm.



September 2016 Newsletter No 94

The September meeting was the presentation of the Caper cheque to the Gloucester Young Carers and Jane had brought along sisters, Pip and Catlin to receive it on behalf of all young carers.   They had enjoyed their day with us in July where they had stood on the start line and flagged off all the cars..   The girls  thanked us for choosing GYC as our Charity and said that the amount we had given them would support one group of 20 young carers for one year.

A few photographs were taken with Brian handing over the cheque.

Brian had a copy of the August issue of Classic Monthly in which there was an article on  the resurrection of an MGB by Phil Gundy who is one of our new Members.  He suggested that it might be of interest and if any of the Members wished to read it they could take the magazine home and return it at the October meeting. 

Brian thanked Trev for organising the visit to Brooklands Museum and suggested that Members put it on their list of things to do as it was a very interesting place.  The Sultan of Oman's personal VC10 was there with many other aircraft, London Transport Museum and of course the Brooklands Museum, three things for the price of one.

On Laurence's behalf Adrian asked if there was anyone else interested in the September Purton Hulk visit with Sunday lunch afterward.

Adrian went through the diary listings for 2017 in the hope that Members would volunteer to organise the Sunday lunches and evening runs.  More than  half of the year was sorted.

Andy Jarrett's run on the 27th September would start from the Fromebidge Mill Whitminster with the first car away at 6pm owing to the darkening of the nights. 

The Club would be having a social event on the 16th October which would be free to Members.  Keith had arranged a short run from Painswick Car Park at 11.15am with the finish in a field near his home where there would be a marquee.  Wendy would provide the food and soft drinks,  but should anyone require beer, wine etc then they would need to provide it themselves.

Two charities were put forward for the 2017 Caper with Teresa giving outline details of the Butterfly Garden in Cheltenham and Sue reading details of the Willow Trust based in Saul on behalf of Laurence who was absent from the meeting.  The voting was very close and after a lot of discussion it was decided to defer the decision until the October meeting as we were thin on ground with a lot of the stalwart Members away. 
 Adrian was asked if he would put the two proposals on the web site so that Members could look and digest in the comfort of their own home.

Trev was asked to comment on the 2017 Caper and he stated the organisation would start in October.   Adrian said that we already had 4 entries.

Jane had passed around the invites for the Xmas bash with Members being asked to keep the date free and that Dave and Liz would be taking numbers at the next meeting, they would also have the menu choice.

Geoff  asked if any Members would be interested in doing the Llandudno run which would take place on the 20th August 2017.   He and Mandy had found a very nice hotel to stay in and there were 9 rooms available at £78.00 per room per night .  Several hands went up so Geoff will go ahead and book.

The Caption Contest was won not by Gethin or Brian but by Keith and he was presented with a bottle of wine by Adrian.

Gethin and Jan had collected the 5 Club Pennants which had been made up by a friend of theirs.  Brian asked that the lady be thanked for the excellent job she had done, in fact they were far superior to the originals.

There were two special occasions happening in September, Tony would be 80, which is hard to believe, and Janet and John were celebrating their Golden Wedding.  We sang 'happy birthday' for the benefit of Tony and Adrian made the comment that there should be no bumps as his back would give out.

We were to have a quiz by Keith after the raffle, but due to the low attendance it was decided to keep the quiz for another time.




August 2016 Newsletter No 93

The August meeting was a little late is getting underway due to the setting up of the equipment for the presentation by Paul Barnet.   Brian said that we were ready to go and commented on the good turnout of Members. 

Brian introduced Paul who he said was a passionate speaker and was Chairman of the Friends of Purton Hulks.

Paul thought that he would not need a microphone and he was certainly correct.  He said it was lovely to be with us and that his talks usually take about 75 minutes but he would gallop through his presentation and keep it to 45 minutes.  He informed us that Purton was the largest Ships Graveyard in Great Britain with 86 vessels on the river bank.  He can remember playing on the hulks in 1971 when he was a lad.   From his accent you wouldn't have believed that he was from Newcastle-upon-Tyne but Paul said that he had toned down the accent otherwise no-one would be able to understand what he was saying.  He said that the hulks had been used for protecting the bank as in 1909 the canal was in danger of being breached.  At one time they were intact but over the years people had been taking the wood for home fires and in later years had been having barbecues by the hulks and using the wood.  The major vessels were set alight to get whatever precious metals were in them.

Needless to say Paul did run over his 45 minutes but it was an excellent and informative presentation and gave us a taste of what was to come for our visit to the Purton Hulks at the end of September.  Laurence has arranged for a 3 hour visit to the site with lunch at the Mariners Arms in Berkeley afterwards. 

Brian thanked Paul and there was an enthusiastic applause after which Members waylaid Paul for more information.

Mo ably assisted by John carried out the raffle during the comfort break.

Brian re-opened the meeting saying that we were back on the agenda asking Sue if we were still solvent, to which she replied yes.   Laurence ran through the upcoming events  first asking Brian about his August run.  To date 12 cars had booked in,  meeting at Barrow Wake on the Tuesday after Bank Holiday Monday.

Laurence asked if anyone other than Geoff Wakefield was interested in attending Tetbury Show on the 4th September and Martin and Graham confirmed that they would like to go.  Adrian would be advised of this and would arrange entry for them.

Gethin had 31 names for the Abingdon visit on the 2nd October and he confirmed that the service at the pub where we would have lunch was very good and we would not have to pre-order.

Brian made the comment that the nights were drawing in which brings us onto the Xmas Bash which Liz and Dave were organising.  They would not be at the September meeting but would have the menu choice ready for October and would take numbers at this time.

Laurence had run off the comments made by the attendees of the Caper should anyone wish to read them but they could also go into our website to look at them.

Trev informed Members that we would be having a social event on Sunday 16th October which Keith Lewis had very kindly offered to organise.  There would be a short run finishing at Keith's' home where there would be a marquee,  a  pig roast had been the original thinking but Wendy (Keith's wife) had  suggested  that she would like to provide the food.  This all met with approval so at the September meeting numbers will be taken.

The Charity for next year would be decided at either the September or October meeting and Members were once again reminded to think about who they would like to nominate.

Brian thanked the brothers Child for their excellent run on the 26th July.  He also said that South Cerney on the 7th August had been a very good day with 18 cars from our Club attending.   The only downside was the very high wind but we did have protection from this with the gazebo which fortunately stood up to the test.

As it was Paul's 60th birthday on the 9th August  we all joined in with the singing of happy birthday.

July 2016 Newsletter No 92

Brian welcomed Members to the July meeting commenting on the fact that none of  them had been called into Downing Street that day.  He welcomed Phil our latest new Member who was a dual MG man!

Brian said that the Cotswold Caper had been a superb success with many good comments and that it had raised over £5,000 with the presentation of the cheque to Gloucester Young Carers taking place at the September meeting.  He thanked everyone who had been involved in the Caper and said that the 2017 one was already underway, but it would be at the earlier date of the 25th June, so that it would not clash with various other events which were happening in Cirencester the following Sunday.

For those new Members who had not met Adrian our Secretary before,  Brian said that he had been let out of Bournemouth for the weekend as it was the Yorkshire Pudding Run which he was attending with 8 other Members plus partners and cars.

Sue informed Members that we were still solvent and we would have to think of ways of spending the money.

A few more people were needed to make the Teddy Bear's Picnic on the 24th July  a viable event .  John and Tony's evening run on the 26th July would start from Seven Springs with the first car away at approximately 6.30pm.

Adrian had the  passes for the South Cerney Steam Fair on the 7th August and Members were to collect them from him during the break.  Brian had volunteered to organise the meeting up at Beeches Car Park Cirencester at 9am on the day and he would be lead car to the event.

Trev asked that those going on the Brooklands trip on the 7th September bring along their money to the August meeting as one cheque was required by the Museum.   Gethin said that the meal after our visit to Abington would need to be pre-booked and he would bring the menu to the August meeting for Members to make their choice.

We will be having a talk on the Purton Hulks in August and Laurence will be organising a visit to the hulks in September followed by lunch at a local hostelry.

Brian and Teresa's evening run on the 30th August will start from Barrow Wake which will be quite safe as it will still be light.   The first car will be away at 6.15pm  for a 32 mile run around a lot of the most beautiful pot holes in the county!

Adrian said that we already had one entry for the 2017 Caper and by October we would need to make a decision on the Charity we were going to support.   He asked Members to put their thinking caps on and come up with some suggestions.

The clothing company which Jane has been dealing with has a huge range and delivery of  regalia would be two weeks after the order was placed.

Adrian said that the Caption Contest is usually won by Gethin or Brian and this time it was Brian who was presented with a bottle of wine.  There is now a new Caption on the web-site and Members were asked to get their 'words' to Adrian.

Towards the end of 2015 we had a couple of Christmas Stalls and this would be repeated at the November meeting which would be a great time to get Xmas presents.   Julie would be  bringing along her jewellery.

Steve was unable to be at the meeting and had asked Laurence to mention the away trip in May next year to Wales.  He had booked Llanerchindda Farm once again for the 26-29 May 2017 which would be a 3 night break with dinner, bed and breakfast at £230.00 per person.  There were 3 spaces available.

Brian said that there were two very special occasions happening in July, Tony and Jane were celebrating their Golden Wedding on the 30th July and Laurence and Jane their Ruby on the 31st July, so many congratulations to both couples.

It was also great to see Eddy at the meeting with the good news that he was now in remission.

As there was no speaker for the evening Members were able to socialise whilst the raffle was taking place.


June 2016 Newsletter No 91

Brian decided to abandon the microphone and  welcomed Members to the June meeting on a very warm evening.   The set out of the room was not the usual rows of chairs but had rows of tables and chairs giving it the look of a school room which prompted Brian to say that the 'exam would start with a quiz by Gethin' much to the amusement of the Members.

 A very big thank you was given to Gethin who took control of the May meeting due to the entire Committee being on holiday.   It was also an educational evening as he had prepared one of his quiz's entitled Cars and Clobber with 28 questions, of which two teams tied with 13 points resulting in a tie break question. 

The break to Laon was not without its' mishaps as our organisers,  Steve and Marion,  had car problems and only got as far as Dover.  Steve had planned the whole trip with stops at various places of interest and as we were given full routes etc we were able to keep to his itinerary.

Sue reported that funds were excellent and that 12 Members had not renewed.

Laurence in his role as Secretary ran through the diary listing starting with Keith's run on the 28th June which would start from Gambier Parry Hall/Highnam Church car park with the first car away at 6pm.  The run would be approximately 35 miles and there were two menu choices one specially for senior citizens.

A show of hands was requested to make sure that the July Teddy Bears Picnic was a goer and as at least four Members showed an interest in the run before the picnic it will go ahead.  Pete said that the picnic was an important part of the MG calendar where Members and their families can enjoy a social gathering.

The passes for the August South Cerney Steam Fair would be handed out at the July meeting. 

Trev said that the trip to Brooklands in September was all organised. 

The question of Public Liability Insurance for the Caper was raised and Brian confirmed that we were covered by the MGOC.  The entries are now closed as we have reached the maximum of 170 cars which was the target, but raffle prizes are still required as this is our  biggest money spinner.  Items for the hamper would still be welcome even on the day of the Caper.

The route has been completed and has now gone to the printer.
Jane said there was nothing new on the regalia front and that it was probably not the time to be thinking about sweatshirts as it was too hot.

Gethin has organised a visit to the Abingdon Museum on the 2nd October after which we will have a trip around the original MG test route followed by a meal at the end of the day.

Janet had brought in route books from previous Capers and Brian said that if anyone was interested in doing the run once again or anyone new to the Club fancied a 100 mile run to take a book/books and give a donation for this year's Charity.

As there was no other business it was time for a comfort break and the raffle after which we had another of Gethin's mind blowing quizzes.  This time it was on music with 20 questions most of which were car orientated.  The winners were Rob and Myn with 13 correct answers closely followed by Jane and Laurence with 10.  It must be pointed out that Rob and Myn are probably the youngest of the Members so they must be congratulated as a lot of the questions related to records from the 50 and 60s.

April 2016 Newsletter No 90

Brian welcomed all Members to the April meeting which was the highlight of the MG year, the AGM.  He explained that absences were not usually recorded but should anyone wish them to be then we would oblige.
The Newsletter from last year's AGM was taken as the minutes and Brian ran very briefly through the reports of the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer as no-one wanted them read out in full. 
It was pointed out by Brian that last year's AGM was completed in less than 30 minutes so pressure was on to get cracking and beat this record.
The first report was from our Chairman and Brian reported that it had been another excellent  year for the Club.  He said that we continued to have a full diary with runs, lunches, trips to other Clubs and also some foreign adventures.
He thanked the Committee for the work they did in keeping the Club running, but stressed that it was the Members Club and without their support we would not be so successful.  He thanked everyone who had arranged the evening runs and lunches and to those Members who had supported these events.  Our numbers remain strong and we continue to welcome new Members.
It was with sadness that we lost Philip Fisher in September 2015 after a brave fight with cancer.  Philip was a great character and he is very much missed.
The Cotswold Caper raised £5,700 for Allsorts Charity which exceeded all expectations and we should all be proud.
The 2016 Caper is progressing well taking in the Cotswolds with the route starting and finishing in Cheltenham.  The date for the diary is the 3rd July and as we are near the maximum number that can be accommodated application forms should be sent to Adrian with great haste.
Brian then handed over to our Secretary Adrian who said it had been another successful year with many varied outings.  Trev and Sue bowled us over at the start of the year with a skittles match closely followed by the annual outing to St Roses in Stroud.  Geoff and Mandy organised the first run of the year in April with the last run in September being organised by Andy Jarrett finishing at the Whitminster Hotel.
A trip to Llanerchindda Farm in Wales in May arranged by Steve and Marion was well supported and enjoyed by everyone as was the overseas visits to Normandy staying in Arromanches and Prague organised by Adrian and Rita.
Derrick and Pete organised the Teddy Bears picnic in July and 13 cars attended the Steam Show at South Cerney in August.
The Sunday lunches started again in October with the first one being organised by Sue and Trev and then November saw us return to the Beacon Hotel at Haresfield organised by Brian and Teresa.
Our annual Christmas dinner was held once again at the Lilleybrook Golf Club with 42 Members attending.  Another highly successful evening organised by Tony and Jane.
The first lunch of 2016 was at the Old Crown of Crucis arranged by Carol and Les with Jane and Laurence organising the February one and Tim and Louise bringing up the rear for the last one of the season.
All those who organised these events enjoyed themselves and provided entertainment for the rest of the Club.  Without these volunteers doing the work the Club would not function and indeed there would be no Club. So thank you to everyone who had contributed to make the Club a success.
It was then over to Sue for her Treasurers Report  and she  hoped that everyone had checked out the accounts on the web site and had seen that the balance in the bank was still healthy.
The website was still paying for itself but even it is wasn't it was a worthwhile investment as those who have the internet have the opportunity to see what is going on within the Club.
Mo and her band of helpers were still doing a sterling job in taking money from Members for the raffle which is a good source of revenue as Membership had been kept at £10.00 for some years.
Sue asked if there were any questions regarding the accounts,  John had a query about Membership which was explained by Adrian.
Pete raised the question of Members being reimbursed for their mileage when testing the route for the Caper which involved high mileage.  He did say that is was the best run in the country and those involved should be paid for the fuel they use.  The points raised were noted.
Brian asked whether anyone would propose that the accounts be accepted which they were.  The accounts would be audited by Eddy Hunter at a later date.
It was then time for the election of Club Officers.  The current Committee were happy to stay for another year, Brian Clarke (Chairman), Adrian Mullins (Secretary) Sue Panter (Treasurer) Laurence Gulliford (Assistant Secretary) Jane Gulliford (Regalia Officer) and Trev Panter (Technical Officer).
Steve Wood proposed re-election of the Committee which was seconded by Tim Davies.  All Members agreed and Brian said that we would do our best for another year.
As there was no other business the AGM was closed at 8.25pm
Brian then opened the ordinary monthly meeting welcoming Terry from Canada who had visited us before and Dave Chisman and James Spencer who had both joined before the meeting commenced.  Brian said it was lovely to see James as he was half the age of most of the Club Members. 
Adrian said that Sunday 24th April was our annual visit to St Roses Wheelnuts Show and that those attending should be on site by 9am.  Geoff's' evening run, the first of the new year, would be starting from The Lodge, Minchinhampton Common with the first car away at 6pm.
Although the Members had just voted us in, the whole of the Committee would be out of the country for the May meeting but never fear it would be run properly by Gethin and that there would be a quiz after the meeting.  Gethin said that the quiz would be sympathetic to the female Members of the Club.
Terry and Liz were organising the May run which was on the 24th and would start from Dowdeswell Hill.
South Cerney Steam Fair is on the 7th August but as the organisers insist on having applications in early Adrian asked that those who wanted to attend should let him know without delay.
There was no interest in the Gloucester Retro Festival on the 27th August or a visit to Sudeley on the 18th September.
The entries for the Caper have now reached 136 which is a record on last year and there are now only 34 places left.   Janet and John have custody of the raffle prizes and judging by the amount brought in to the meeting  by the Members they could have problems getting into their spare bedroom.
Gethin asked if Members would be interested in a visit to Abingdon Museum with a trip around the route which was used to test the MGs.   There was a good show of hands so he will put together a few dates. 
Rob from Autoparts was offering Millers lead replacement for £6.22 including VAT which was an excellent price. 
There were lots of raffle prizes and Mo and Carol did a good job in taking money from our Members.
Brian closed the meeting whereupon the social part of the evening began.



March 2016 Newsletter No 89

Brian was back in harness and welcomed two new Members,  Ken Coyle from Hereford who has once again entered the Caper after enjoying last year's run and Martin Waring who joined before the meeting started.
Brian said that Jane Dyer from Gloucester Young Carers would tell about what they do first and the business part of the meeting would take place afterwards.
Jane thanked us for welcoming her and in choosing Gloucester Young Carers as our Charity for this year.  She explained that she is the Fund Raising and Marketing Manager and had been with GYC for 8 years.  Gloucester Young Carers is an independent charity which was home-grown 22 years ago and covers the whole of the County caring for young persons in the age range of 5-25 years.  They are supporting around 1000 carers in the Gloucestershire area who are dealing with amongst other problems,  mental health issue and disabilities, but it is closer to 7000 who have caring roles in the family.   The young people do not have to be referred via doctors etc they can self refer.
GYC have 18 paid staff members  who have a background in mental health and social work and they have the support of approximately 50 volunteers.
Jane is very much involved with 13 groups where the young carers can meet, relax and do normal everyday things and the costs for these groups is about £6,000 per year per group.    The costs include transport, sometimes taxis,  so that the young carers can be  collected and returned to their homes in the quickest  possible time.  The money we will raise will go towards the cost of running these groups which are essential for the young people.
Jane was an eloquent speaker and imparted a lot of information in the short presentation .  Brian gave a vote of thanks to Jane and said it was our 11th year of the Caper and we had always done well and hope that we have a big cheque for GYC by September.
We had a break to charge our glasses and for Mo and Carole to do their usual with the raffle tickets.
When we reconvened Brian gave a brief explanation of the Caper to our two 'new guys'
Brian said that Adrian had not received any nominations to date for the AGM which was in April, but there was still time.  Membership is being kept at £10.00 per car and Sue would be happy to take money off Members before the next meeting.

Laurence,  standing in for Adrian, asked whether there was any more interest in St Roses Wheelnuts Show on the 24th April and also South Cerney Steam Fair on the 7th August as the entries needed to be in quite quickly to secure a good area to set up our gazebo.
Tim and Louise's Sunday lunch on the 20th March at The George Cambridge would be the last one until October as it was time for the evening runs to commence with Geoff and Mandy organising the first one on Tuesday 26th April.  Terry and Liz sent round the menu in preparation for their evening run on Tuesday 24th May.
The Child Bros,  John and Tony, had come up trumps and offered to take on the July evening run in place of Eddy who is not too well at present.
Trev informed Members that he had booked the coach and organised a tour at Brooklands Motor Museum on Wednesday 7th September and as he only has a 2 week window to confirm asked Members to let him know within that time if they were interested in the trip. 
Much to Brian's surprise it was remembered that he had had a significant birthday in February and there was a rendition of 'happy birthday' it also happened to be Dave's birthday so there was a repeat performance!!!
Raffle prizes and advertisements were still required for the Caper, entries were still coming in and were now at 112.
Jane has been looking into Companies who would take on the job of supplying pennants with our new logo but it was proving quite expensive.   Our clothing supplier is happy to put the logo onto material but Jane needed a volunteer to make up the pennant and I believe one of our Members may 'know a person who does'!!
The winner of the Caption Contest was Gethin with 'Biggles hangs on in amazement as an MGTF starts first time'.

February 2016 Newsletter No 88


Our Chairman, Brian, was unable to attend the meeting as he had been given an early birthday present of a trip to the theatre which happened to be that night,  so Adrian did the honours of conducting the proceedings.

Laurence and Jane had arranged a presentation by the Friends of Gloucester Waterways Museum who had impressed them at their History Group.   The four ladies who were in the traditional wear of  narrowboat women, were introduced by Adrian.

They explained that they were not historians but just a group of woman who were interested in the day to day life of the women.  It was a very hard life for them,  working dawn till dusk steering the boat, jumping on and off to open locks and also to help their husbands load or unload materials which were being transported.  They were obviously unpaid and worked in all weathers.   After their men had gone off  to the public house they did the home chores,  cooking, cleaning and looking after their children.  The living space was very small and doubled up as kitchen and sleeping quarters, very often there were 4-5 children which would require them sleeping head to toe.    When the children were very young they would be tied to the boat to stop them from falling in the canal. 
The children learnt their skill from a very early age and were competent steerers from the age of 8 or 9, they also had to look after the horse at the end of the day, stabling it rubbing it down and bedding it for the night.

The women were very adept at making rag rugs which were used for either sleeping on or under and also crocheting shawls which were triangular in shape with no fringes.  They had to be practical.

It was an enthralling presentation by the four ladies who interacted with great skill.  Their knowledge and the information they imparted to the Members was second to none.

Adrian gave a vote of thanks.

Mo, who I am pleased to say was better, ably assisted by Jane fleeced the Members for the raffle, it was down to Marion to call out the winning numbers as there was a lot of background noise (chatter) going on.


Adrian took over the reins once again reminding Members that April was the AGM and  nominations for the Committee should be sent to him.

Laurence and Janes' Sunday lunch on the 21st February would be at the Clothiers Arms meeting at 1pm for 1.30pm sit down.  Tim and Louise would be organising the March Sunday lunch on the 20th which would be held at The George, Cambridge.

Gloucestershire MG Owners Club had taken over the hotel in Bournemouth for the first weekend in April, but should any Members still wish to join the group then there was a B & B in the near vicinity.

St Roses Wheelnuts Show was once again on 'drive it day' 24th April and a list of Members was required so that we could enter and take pride of place as usual.   The 7th August if South Cerney Steam Fair and in order to obtain an entry it was necessary to book early.

Andy Jarrett had mentioned that Dursley Rotary Club were holding their annual run on the 19th June with the cost being £50.00 which includes rolls both at the start and finish. 

There are now 96 entries for the Cotswold Caper with the run in the completion stage.  Gethin asked if there was an authorisation letter from the Charity which could be shown when asking for advertisements.

As the numbers are being capped Adrian suggested that Members should get their entry forms in quickly should they wish to be considered.

Steve suggested that the start and finish should be available on the website.

Trev thought a trip to Brooklands Motor Museum later in the year might be of interest to Members and asked for any interested party to add their name to the list being passed around.

January 2016 Newsletter No 87


All too quickly another year had passed and Brian wished those Members present at the meeting  a very Happy New Year.  He couldn't understand where everyone was as it wasn't the AGM but Gethin's quiz!   Brian also welcomed Ben who was a third of the way through restoring his grandfather's MGA.  He would be in good company with Steve who was unavoidably delayed in Aberystwyth.

Tony and Jane were thanked for organising yet another excellent Christmas Bash at the Lilley Brook Golf Club. 

Brian said that April would be the AGM when Members could elect the Committee for the next year.  He also informed Members who the present Committee were and said that they were willing to continue for another year.   If anyone wished to be considered and nominated they were to email Adrian our Secretary advising him of the post they wished to fill i.e. Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Technical Officer or Regalia Officer.
Sue said that we were still solvent.

The microphone was proving too loud  and Laurence, who is Assistant Secretary,  was asked to turn it down a little which caused some amusement from the Members.  Laurence ran through the coming events with the first one being Les and Carol's meal on the 24th January at The Old Crown of  Crucis, which is a new venue for us.  The February meeting would be a talk by the Friends of Gloucester Waterways Museum about life on the narrow boats from a woman's perspective.

The February Sunday lunch would be on the 23rd at The Clothiers Arms Stroud which Laurence and Jane are organising.

Forward thinking was required as all of the Committee would be away for the May meeting the majority would be taking their MGs to France for the Laon Historique 2016 trip organised by Steve.   Adrian and Rita would also be away.  After a lull in proceedings Gethin very kindly offered to chair the meeting.

Adrian had asked Laurence to mention our website which is a fabulous resource and useful for Members to find out what events are happening within the Club.  If anyone was interested in advertising their car, not in the selling sense of the word, could they do a write-up and send a photograph to Adrian which would be interesting for other Members to read.
Bridgend MGOC will be hosting their Cwm to Coast run on the 12th June if anyone was interested in attending, details would be on their website and John mentioned the Dursley Rotary Club Run which is also on the 12th June.

Trev and Paul will be doing the first preliminary run of the Caper on Saturday 23rd January which is ahead of schedule and Paul is reasonably happy with what he has produced to date.   There will be a trial run in June which will iron out any problems.  Adrian has received 19 entries already.

Jane advised Members that the regalia now included hoodies which would be a bonus with the weather turning cold.

Our Chairman was presented with a bottle of wine for his winning entry for the Caption Contest  which was ' I hope that's Diet Coke Eddie'   One of the Members thought that as Brian was the winner he should share out the wine, which would only be a thimble full each!!

Rob asked if the trip to the garage in Tewkesbury could be resurrected as it was cancelled last year due to the illness of the owner.  Mike said he was no longer in contact with the gentleman but would look into it.

 Members wished for news on Eddie who has been undergoing treatment and the information we had received was that he was doing ok and was his usual chirpy self. 

As Tony and Jane had organised the Christmas Meal for the last 3 years Brian asked once again if there was anyone else who would undertake the job for 2016.  As there were no offers the Committee would take it on returning to the Lilly Brook Golf Club.  Tony was asked if he would book the venue on the Committee's behalf.

As Mo was poorly and Diana was unable to come along as she always has a lift with Eddie,  Carol and Teresa took money from the Members for the raffle.   Although we were short on Members they managed to extract £33.00!

The meeting convened after a short break and it was time for Gethin's quiz.  True to form there were 20 general knowledge questions which tested the brains of all Members.  There was one group who excelled by getting 11 right, Pete and Rob were rewarded with a bottle of wine.  Many thanks to Gethin, hopefully the music quiz which he has in readiness will be a little easier!!!!


November 2015 Newsletter No 86


Brian opened the meeting and informed those assembled that the Caper Charity for 2016 would be chosen tonight,  the three possibles were St Roses Special School,  Gloucestershire Young Carers and The Willow Trust.  By a show of hands Gloucestershire Young Carers were selected,  Brian said he would now contact them and advise of our proposed support.
Adrian spent some time filling in the diary for 2016,  he had some success!!  Trev volunteered Sue,  in her absence,  to organise the Teddy Bear's Picnic in July.

Tony said everything was in order for the Christmas Meal at the Lillybrook Golf Club and the number of Members attending had crept up.  He is still looking for raffle prizes.

Gethin was the winner of the Caption Contest, which showed Rita discretely hidden behind a net curtain.
The trip to Bath Brewery is  on hold at present, with Adrian looking into the possibility of adjacent Clubs joining us on the visit.
To Trev's embarrassment someone mentioned that his birthday was the following day so there was a rendition of 'happy birthday'.

Our raffle ladies excelled themselves this month by taking £40.00 from the Members,  a very big 'well done' to Mo and her little helper.

Laptops and screens were on display set up by Brian in readiness for a picture quiz provided by Liz and Terry.  After the short break we all made up small teams and set about the quiz.  Eighteen local pictures were shown and Dave Carter came out on top winning the obligatory bottle of wine.   The quiz was of interest to everyone and will be,  I am sure,  worthy of another in the future.  Thanks to Liz and Terry.

The meeting closed and the usual chat followed.

PS  Just received a Membership form for Paul and Ness who were at the meeting and a warm welcome is extended.




October 2015 Newsletter No 85

Brian welcomed four people, who might be potential Members, to the meeting Paul and Ness who were from Bristol and Eric and Colin who were very local living not far from The Gala Club.

He informed Members that Philip Fisher had lost the battle with his cancer on the 12th September but he had managed to clock up his 70 years which he was determined to do right from the beginning of this year.  Philip had been a Member of the Club since 2011 and we had a one minute silence in memory of him.

Andy had organised a superb run on the 29th September but unfortunately was not at the meeting to receive the warm thanks from the Members who attended.  Tony said it was the first time for Andy and it was an excellent run.  Gethin commented that it was the smoothest run we had had in years with no pot holes and no mistakes.  Well done Andy.

Pete commented on the sound system saying that the microphone was good and Brian confirmed that it had been tweaked since the September meeting.

At last month's meeting Members had been asked to think about which Charity we should support for the 2016 Caper and most Members should have received a reminder from Adrian via email.  Dave C suggested a Charity in memory of Philip and as several Members had attended his funeral service that day they were aware that donations were to be sent to either Cancer Research UK or Katherine House Hospital.   Brian emphasised that the Charity would be chosen at the November meeting and any suggestions should be sent to Adrian with a synopsis of why this Charity should be supported.

Movements are in place for the Caper and once the Charity is selected it will be full steam ahead.

Sue confirmed that the Club funds were solvent.

Brian then handed over to Adrian's' little helper' Laurence to run through the diary.

Laurence apologised for the fact that he had a funny throat and nose, the start of a cold no doubt.  There would be a quiz by Liz at the next meeting, a quiz with a difference, which would involve pictures on the projector.

Brian and Teresa would be organising the November Sunday lunch which he had completely forgotten about but details would be on the website.

Tony passed round the menu for the Xmas meal the cost of which will be £20.00 per person a little less than last year as there will be a separate collection for the staff.  Payments can be made on the night.  There will be dancing and a raffle and Members were asked to donate prizes already wrapped in pretty Christmas paper.

Tony asked Sue to read out the names of those who would be going to the Sunday lunch at The Tudor Arms Slimbridge on the 25th October which she did stating that it was 12.30pmfor 1pm meal.

Sue also mentioned that the entry form for those who were interested in the Yorkshire Pudding Run in July next year was on the Leeds MGCCC website.

For the benefit of the four guests Brian explained about the Caper run which is held every July.

Pete was concerned that those involved with the Caper were not claiming expenses which when testing the 90 mile run were quite high.  Brian did say that expenses had been claimed for 2015 and should show up in the accounts which Adrian would produce very soon.

Laurence explained that Adrian is looking for volunteers to take on the organisation of runs and Sunday lunches next year and as he would be at the next meeting perhaps Members could think about it and volunteer.

Brian will check out dates for a visit to the Bath Brewery.

It had been many months since we had seen Alastair and Louise who had tied the knot in August and it was good to welcome them back.

John was going to help Mo with the raffle as Diana was not in attendance but Carol decided that she would do it.  Raffle this month was £28.00.

Jane said that anyone who wished to purchase Club clothing to speak to her and at the moment there is quite a quick turn round with the supplier.

The meeting was closed and Julie showed off the jewellery she had made and we were all very impressed.



September 2015 Newsletter No 84

The September meeting was late in getting started with Brian welcoming all Members with apologies due to flashing blue lights and the road to the Gala Club being closed with someone suggesting it was because of an incident at Over.

Members were asked to get their cameras ready as Brian informed us we would start the evening with the presentation of the big Caper cheque on a small bit of paper to Max Pemberton who would accept it on behalf of Allsorts Charity.  It was noted by Brian that the cheque had not been signed!!!     Max thanked the Club on behalf of his organisation for our support and in raising a phenomenal amount of money which would be going towards a sports project which he would be running as Sports Co-ordinator.  He mentioned that St Roses who we had supported in past years came under the same organisation.

There were photographs taken of Max with the Caper Committee and of the helpers on the actual Caper day. 

Max took his leave and the meeting commenced.

Andy Jarrett a fairly recent Member is organising his first run and our last run of the year on the 29th September and he thanked Paul for his help and advice on how to set out a tulip run.  If it all goes wrong then he (Andy) is not to blame!!!  The run will be approximately 30 miles which would take about an hour starting from Fromebridge Mill at Whitminster and Member were asked not to be there before 6pm as Andy was working that day.  However, the first car away would be about 6.15pm.  Adrian asked Members to let Andy know if they would be attending so that he could print off the correct number of routes and it was good to see a first timer doing a run.  From first timer to old timer, Trev is organising Sunday lunch on the 25th October which would be at the Tudor Arms Slimbridge.

The next big event is the Christmas Bash which Tony confirmed would be on the 12th December at The Lilleybrook Golf Club 7pm for 7.30pm.  He would need to know numbers and would bring along the menu to the October meeting.

Adrian asked if Members had any thoughts for next year’s programme.  Jane confirmed that she would look into a visit to Cheltenham Racecourse for a look behind the scenes and she had provided a leaflet on the Severn Free Wheelers which sounded interesting.  Brian would be looking into this one.

Gethin has a music quiz which he had sorted a long time ago, but no one seemed to want to do it.  Adrian suggested that perhaps it was because it would be mainly Welsh Music.

There are six cars plus drivers and passengers booked for the Laon trip in May 2016, Steve saying that it has proved very popular and that all the hotels in Laon are already booked up.  Adrian was keen to go but otherwise engaged and asked Steve if he would be organising the trip in 2017, but unfortunately Steve has other ideas as it is the Monaco Historic meeting.

Leeds MG Classic Car Club is putting on their Pudding Run in July and it was thought that it would be good to have a contingent from our Club participating.  Steve had attended the run this year and thoroughly enjoyed it, so if Members were interested they would have to get their entries in early (entry forms are out in October), as numbers are restricted.

Members were asked to think about which Charity to support for the 2016 Cotswold Caper and bring their suggestions to the October meeting.

Adrian asked for an update on regalia but realised that Jane and Laurence (assistant secretary) were enjoying themselves in Guernsey.

The latest Caption Contest was not won by either Gethin or Brian but by Keith H who was suitably surprised.  Adrian presented him with a bottle of red wine.

It was time to decide whether Members wished to go on the free trip to Bath Brewery and Brian asked for a show of hands, there were insufficient to warrant a coach.  Brian would contact the Brewery and find out what dates would be available.

Brian said it was a big day for Les, it’s his ?????? Birthday and could we have a copy of the Queen’s telegram to put in our showcase?    Philip who is not a very well person was delighted to receive a card on his 70th birthday from his friends at the Club.

At the October meeting Julie will be bringing along her jewellery for Members to view with a percentage of the proceeds going to a Charity of our choice.  Graham will also have some watches to sell.  So it will be a Christmas Bazaar!!

The article in ‘Enjoying MG’ on the Caper was by our brilliant correspondent who lives in Bournemouth.  The Club received a cheque for £80.00 for this two page spread.

Pete asked if he was the only Member who thought the microphone was rubbish and Terry suggested turning the echo knob down or ‘looking at the manual’ might help.

On the Committee table there was an item which was not recognised by a lot of the Members,  it was a dial gauge which would be added to the tool list and was ideal for diagnosing brake shudder and available for Members to borrow.  Brian explained for the benefit of any new Member that Trev held a good selection of Club tools which they could borrow.

Mo and Diana did a splendid job in taking £35.00 for the raffle.

Brian closed the meeting whereupon Members replenished their glasses and socialised.




August 2015 Newsletter No 83


Brian welcomed depleted numbers to the August meeting, was it the thought of one of Gethin’s brain taxing quizzes!   I think not, August is the holiday period for a lot of families.  Laurence acted as Secretary as Adrian was otherwise engaged in sunny Bournemouth.  Sue had a family visitor so decided to stay home and entertain her cousin consuming a few glasses of wine.

The twenty-five Members present were informed that Richard Ward’s run on the 25th August would start from Bentham with the first car away at 6pm. 

The September meeting would be the presentation of the Caper cheque to Allsorts with the last run of the season being organised by Andy Jarrett starting at the Fromebridge Mill Hotel at Whitminster, first car away at 6pm.  Details would be on the website.

Forthcoming events were discussed, with Laurence arranging a talk on the Purton Hulks and with the possibility of an informed Sunday visit to the site on the banks of the River Severn followed by lunch at a local inn.  Laurence also arranging a talk on Narrowboats in the New Year.

Gethin has volunteered to do a ‘music quiz’ which sounds interesting.  Further suggestions would be welcome from the Members.

Jane mentioned the possibility of looking at the workings of Cheltenham Race Course.

There are seven cars attending the Tetbury Car Show on the 6th September, anyone is welcome to join and it is proposed to meet at Tesco’s car park in Tetbury at 9.30am prompt.

Steve told Members about a trip to  France for the Laon Historique in May 2016 which sounded very interesting.  Members should contact Steve for further details should they wish to join those Members already attending.

Gethin’s quiz was a surprise to everyone, quite difficult and no car questions.

As Diana was not at the meeting Mo enlisted the help of John with the raffle and they extracted £25.00 from the Members. 


July 2015 Newsletter No 82


My thanks to Laurence who carried on the Newsletter tradition for June whilst I was away in sunny Bedford.  He even added photographs which was a welcome addition.

The meeting was a little late in getting started as, due to a little confusion on our Treasurers part, we thought our guest speaker for the evening would be starting off the proceedings.  Brian welcomed Brian, who had decided to join us for the meeting and was perhaps a potential new Member.

Adrian asked Pete and Derrick how things were shaping up for the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the 19th July but to date only 2 Members had expressed an interest.  Adrian said that he would email Members and ask them to contact Derrick direct, in the hope of swelling the numbers.  We would all meet at the Royal Oak Gretton where we would have coffee before starting the run at approximately 11am to Minchinhampton Common. 

In the absence of Tony and Jane Adrian said that The Gloucester Classic Car & Bike Show which is usually held later in the year had been brought forward to the 19th July should anyone be interested who were not attending the Teddy Bear’s Picnic.   This show is in aid of the Gloucestershire Multiple Sclerosis Information and Therapy Centre which Tony and Jane support.

Tim confirmed that he had checked all the pubs along the route of his run on the 28th July and had found one that served excellent food.  The start would be in the big car park on Gloucester Road Tewkesbury and the scenery along the way would be exquisite.

August would be a quiz by Gethin, so we will all need to be on top form for this.

There are 14 cars (28 Members) going to the Stroud Vintage Transport and Engine Club Show at South Cerney on the 2nd August meeting up at the Beeches Car Park Cirencester at 9am so that the cars can go in convoy.

Adrian reported that the entrants for the Cotswold Caper was a record of 189 with 200 cream teas being ordered.  It was an excellent run and we had smashed the amount that we had raised last year by quite a considerable amount.  Once he has all the costing, he will report on the correct figure.  He had had 3 pages of feedback from the entrants which were all good and he read out a few of the comments.   There were 89 entries from various Clubs.

The children from Allsorts had a wonderful time waving off the cars and it was a joy to see their happy faces. 

Mike Harding the Sales Director of Bath Ales Brewery had donated a trip for 20 people to visit the brewery and sample the beers.  It was left to the Committee to decide whether to put it into the Caper raffle or use it as a Club trip.  As the usual crowd of reprobates were not at the meeting Brian suggested that we wait until August before we took numbers.  The suggestion is that each Member pays £5.00 for the visit and the proceeds will go into the Caper fund.

The question was asked whether we should get Mike to organise a coach with the proviso that we would not pick up in Bournemouth. There is no time limit on the brewery trip.

Jane said that the polo shirts which we are ordering from a new supplier are rather large, but as she is now familiar with the sizing she can help Members decide on what size to order.

The Caption Contest was won by Keith Lewis, who we have not seen for a little while, as he had undergone surgery on his leg and was now in traction.  We wished him well with the hope that he will soon be able to come along to a meeting.  There will be a new Caption on the website for Members to make their comments and win a bottle of wine.

Brian asked if there were any questions before we broke for the raffle and a comfort break before the presentation by Ann Blagden.

Paul mentioned that the Cleeve Motor Club were holding a run on the 20th September if anyone was interested, it is however during the period when a small contingent of Members will be visiting foreign parts!

As Mo was on holiday in Wales Rita assisted Diana with the raffle.

After the 15 minute interval, when Members had charged their glasses, Brian introduced Ann who was elegantly dressed in a long black coat which was a tradition with Egyptian belly dancing.  When demonstrating the art of dancing you did not uncover yourself to reveal the costume until you actually performed.

Ann gave us a very informative and interesting presentation explaining the difference between Turkish and Egyptian belly dancing, how one is danced up and the other down ie one on tip toes and the other more flat footed.  She also got the Members to try some of the hand and shoulder movements,  still seated of course!   When she removed her coat her suit as it is known was in gold and very beautiful.  At this stage she delighted us with a dance using a long veil which had been made by a friend of hers, this was passed round for the female Members to admire.  Before taking questions Ann unfolded a rather large pair of gold wings with which she danced much to the admiration of all Members.

I think I can safely say that most, if not all Members, were enthralled with Ann’s presentation and demonstration as there were many questions.

The raffle was drawn whilst Ann was changing but she wasn’t able to make a quick escape as Members were interested in talking to her one to one.




June 2015 Newsletter No 81

On a very warm Summer Evening we gathered at a new venue for our June meeting – the Northbound Gloucester Services on the M5, which had been organised by Jane & Laurence.

These services have been open just over a year with the Southbound Services having just opened a few weeks ago.

Our Host was Nicky Wildin, who is the Local Product Manager. She explained about the hard task she has having to taste all the product lines they plan to sell as she works with all the local suppliers.

The Services came about thanks to the Dunning family, who set up their own cafe at Tebay on the M6 in Cumbria in 1972, selling local produce from their own farm and local bakers. This quickly snowballed and has gone from strength to strength. They wanted to open another ‘sister’ service area and realised that Gloucester would fit the bill as it had plenty of local producers, which is their primary business ethic.
In addition they met up with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, who wanted to find a means of creating a sustainable income to go back into the local communities.

We heard how they work with local suppliers and build up a relationship with them, which in many cases has meant the suppliers taking on extra staff to cope with the increase in demand for their products through the services.

It was evident they are very passionate about the products they sell and the suppliers that produce them and also about the staff they employ there.

The whole area has been carefully landscaped and carefully blended in with the surrounding area.

After a few questions, we were then taken on a tour of the facilities, including a behind-the-scenes look at the Kitchen.

Everyone seemed to be impressed with the building and facilities and some members even took a special interest in the shop!

We then got on to the other business of the evening.

Eddy will let us know details about his run on 23rd June.

Trev updated us on the Cotswold Caper. We are up to 180 entrants and about to go to press with the Caper Route book. Janet collected some more items for the Hamper and Raffle Prizes. Any other donations will be gratefully received on the day. Please remember to sell as many raffle tickets as you can and bring the stubs and money along on the day.

Sue has arranged an interesting item for next month’s meeting – belly dancing! Come and see what it’s all about.

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic is progressing well and will take place on 19th July starting at the Royal Oak at Gretton at 10:30. Please let Pete & Derrick know if you want to come and haven’t got your name down yet.

Further details on Tim & Louise’s run on 28th July to be advised.

The South Cerney event is on 2nd August.

No further information on the Gloucester Retro day over the August Bank Holiday has been received.

6 people have put their names down on the list that was circulated for the Tetbury Car Show on 6th August.

2 events were mentioned that have come from Shakespeare Rally promotions- Tortworth Vintage Rally on 8-9th August and Stoke Prior Steam Rally on 18-20th September, but there were no takers.

A copy of the photographic album produced by Llanerchindda was circulated. It is a 20 page record of our visit. Each page has a compilation of photos of each individual car and there are group photos as well. The cost is £15. Contact Llanerchindda direct for a copy.

Finally Jane has received the first batch of garments from the new supplier. Turnaround time is quick and quality good. Please order off the club website or see Jane for any orders.




May 2015 Newsletter No 80


Brian welcomed a new Member to the Club, Eddie Buckley, who had decided to join after initially visiting us back in October 2014.  Brian then explained that we would have the presentation by Neil and a comfort break before the formal part of the meeting as Neil had to head back up the M5 which would take a couple of hours.

Neil Wedgbury was an apprentice at Longbridge for 5 years and had continued to work there as an adult.  He had first-hand experience of the Austin Longbridge underground tunnels which were constructed mainly prior to World War II and gave a very informative talk on the subject showing various interesting slides of how the tunnels were.  The Welsh Miners dug 5 miles of tunnels very quickly, but a lot of them have now been filled in.

The tunnels were used for shelter during the air raids, the storage of important machines and there was also a first aid station manned by nurses. 

It was interesting to know that during the flu epidemic in 1918 thousands of coffins were made on the Longbridge site.

There were quite a few questions from the floor once Neil had finished his presentation after which a vote of thanks was given by Brian.

Whilst Neil was packing up the tools of his trade Mo and Diana did the raffle, which netted £46.00!

Brian reconvened the meeting pointing out that we had our Secretary gracing us with his presence at great expense all the way from Bournemouth.

Steve said that everyone was ready for their away trip to Wales and we would be leaving in convoy at 9.30am for a cross country route via a distillery.

Mike P’s run on the 26th May would start from the Gala Club with the first car away at 6.30pm.

The Caper rehearsal for the Marshalls and Committee Members had been changed to the 31st May and would meet at Speech House leaving en masse at 10.30am.  We were fast approaching the time to close the adverts as the guide has to be produced.  Adrian asked Brian if he had collected the very special bottle of whisky from the person who was donating it and he confirmed that he had and had thoroughly enjoyed it.

The June meeting would be held at the new M5 Northbound Services and it would follow the usual format once the presentation was given.  No getting away from being fleeced by Mo and Diana this month!  Laurence asked if Members could turn up in their MGs and there would be reserved parking for us.  We would also be supplied with tea and coffee for the evening.

There was an update on the teddy bear’s picnic on the 19th July.   Pete and Derrick said that we would meet at the Royal Oak, Gretton where we would have coffee before a 10-10.30 am start, the run would be approximately 35-40 miles finishing as usual on the common at Minchinhampton.  They hoped that Members would encourage the younger generation to attend.  The Cotswold Classic Car Club gathering coincides with the picnic and they are meeting at the Frogmill where there should be a flyover of the Red Arrows and a Lancaster.

Jane is now able to take orders for the clothing and she has been assured of a fairly quick turnaround once the order has been placed. 

Janet R was the winner of the Caption Contest and Adrian presented her with the obligatory bottle of wine.  A new caption would be on the website in a couple of days.

Geoff and Mandy were thanked for organising the April run which was a great success.

David Wood spoke to the Members about Historic Taxation and informed them he had a letter in the current  ‘Enjoying MG’ explaining the ease in which he was able to tax his 1974 MGB GT.

Jane C mentioned that every year she and Tony attend the MS Motor Show and that they were really impressed with last year’s show and thought that some Members might like to attend.  It’s either end of August early September and details would be on the website.




April 2015 Newsletter No 79


After some delay Brian welcomed everyone to the AGM and explained that we were not formal in recording absences.  Adrian then caused amusement by asking Members to make sure that their mobile telephones were turned off so as not to interrupt the proceedings, which set the president for the evening.  Usually at AGMs the minutes from the previous AGM is read, but to some dismay none of the Club Officers had thought to bring them to the meeting.  After some discussion and merriment it was decided to read the newsletter from April 2014 as a record of the meeting but this also caused problems as neither Brian nor Adrian could get a link to the website, Laurence came to the rescue with his iPad.  The notes were read and agreed.

Brian as Chairman gave his report for the year which he said was another excellent year for the Club and as our Secretary would cover the events and runs in his report he would make no mention of these.  He did say that without all those Members who had organised trips, evening runs, lunches, quizzes, talks and raffles we would not be so successful and thanked them all for their support.

He also thanked the Committee for their work in keeping the Club on the road saying that   our numbers remain strong and in 2014/2015 we again welcomed new Members.

The Cotswold Caper was a great day out and raised over £4,000 for the Charity Alabare.  A superb result for a relatively small club with thanks to all those involved in the organisation and running of it.

The 2015 Caper will take a tour to the West of the River Severn beginning and ending at Speech House, preparations are going well.  The route is super and we will have a great day out on 5th July raising lots of money for Allsorts.

Brian asked whether there were any questions – silence so he handed the microphone to Adrian for his longer Secretaries report.  Adrian explained that it a very busy year with lots of away trips.  Gethin had started the year off for the Club by organising a trip to BMW, with a further trip to the Bus Museum in Oxford, where he conducted himself very well.  At this point Members chipped in with quips relating to buses.   Gethin also organised a tour of the British Motor Heritage Museum in Witney.  The first run of the year in April was organised by Geoff and Mandy and we attended the St Roses annual Wheelnuts Show once again.  There were 149 cars entered for the July Cotswold Caper and it was the Fourth Teddy Bears picnic which seems to go from strength to strength.

There was also a visit to South Cerney Steam Fair, followed by the Pendine Dash and the Llandudno Snowden run.  A new event for us was the Pershore Plum Festival and the first Tetbury Car Show.  Tony and Jane organised a fish and chip cruise from Lechlade which 10 cars including their drivers and passengers attended.  There was also a visit to Hook Norton Brewery where 12 Members sampled the beers followed by a pub meal.

A bright sunny day for 15 cars to attend the Sudeley Castle car show for the last trip of the year. 

On 5th November a small group attended the opening of the new facility for Alabare as we had presented them with the Cotswold Caper cheque for £3900, with a further £700 as a result of Tim’s efforts.  It was another successful Christmas meal at the Lilleybrook Golf Club organised by Tony and Jane, with the final event of the MG Club year being a trip by 22 Members to Gods Waiting Room (Bournemouth) for a weekend away and a run organised by yours truly.  Despite the weather which could not be organised it was a fun weekend and may be an annual event.

The evening runs and Sunday lunches were organised by various Members and without those who are willing to put a small amount of work in it would not be so good for all of us.  If anyone was interested in organising an event they were to see one or all of the Committee members. 

On behalf of the Club he thanked everyone who has contributed to make the Club a success.

A short report was given by Sue who hoped that everyone who had the internet had looked at the accounts and that Eddy would be scrutinising them sometime during April so that the accounts could be signed off at the May meeting.  She did mention that Mo and Diana had taken more raffle money from the members this year and increase of £59.02 on last year, not sure where the 2p came from.   The website was still paying for itself.   We had 66 members at the 31st March 2015, 27 Members had renewed before the April meeting with 5 new Members joining in February/March making a total of 32 Members for the New Year. 

With the reports out of the way it was time for the nomination of officers for the year 2015/2016, Adrian had received no nominations.  Brian informed the Members that John R had decided not to continue on the main Committee for this year, but he would continue to be a Member of the Caper Committee.  John was thanked for his work and received a round of applause as an appreciation by the Members.  Laurence had been co-opted onto the Committee last year and was willing to stay and as there was a vacancy it was suggested that Jane Gulliford became a Committee Member as she had taken over responsibility for the regalia from Rita.  Brian suggested that there should be one vote for re-election of   the existing Committee with the addition of Jane.  Mike H asked if Brian could enlighten the Members of the current Committee – Brian Clarke (Chairman) Adrian Mullins (Secretary) Sue Panter (Treasurer) Trevor Panter and  Laurence Gulliford  (Committee Members) plus Jane Gulliford (Regalia).  Rita proposed the Committee and was seconded by John C and all Members agreed with the proposal of one vote.

Brian closed the AGM at 8.30pm and opened the first meeting of the New Year by welcoming John Butterworth to the standard monthly meeting.  Brian displayed the magnetic signs which Adrian had collected from the supplier and advised members that they were available at £4.00 each.  The signs were intended for display on the rear of the cars when attending outside functions, one of our members suggested that they might be an advantage when purchasing a car as these signs would not stick to filler or fibreglass!!!

Adrian advised that the current password for the Members Secure Area on the website would expire at the end of April and Members who had not paid would not be able to gain access.  He also ran through the list of future events the first being Mike’s Techy Talk at Tewkesbury on the 15th April, Trev and Sue’s skittles evening on the 16th April and very importantly St Roses Wheelnuts Show on the 26th April.  He explained that we had a wonderful Club site designer and hoped that we would win best Club stand once again. To date there are 14 cars attending which is a very good number?    It was intended that all cars should be on site by 9.30am. 

The first evening run of the year would be Geoff and Mandy’s on the 28th April and Geoff would like to know who would be attending so that he could run off the correct number of Tulip Diagrams, food to be ordered at the end of the run. On the 9th May there is a driving skills/track day at Gaydon under the assistance of IAM.  Laurence informed Members that they could also look around the museum and the cost would be £25.00 per person and there was no restriction on the make of car.

The June meeting will be held at the new M5 Service Station with the start time of 8pm.

Derrick and Pete will have details of the July Teddy Bear’s Picnic ready for the May meeting, where there will be a talk on the War Tunnels at Austin.

The rooms for the trip to France in September arranged by Adrian have been booked, Members who are going were responsible for booking their own ferry crossing and Steve confirmed that his Welsh trip in May was fully booked.

Mike’s evening run in May will start from the Gala Club with the first car away at 6.30pm, food to be ordered when Members arrive at the hostelry.

There are 11 cars booked in for the South Cerney Steam Show on the 2nd August and details of where we will meet before the event will be given at a later meeting. Adrian did remind Members to let him know which functions they would be attending so that he could advertise it in the Members Secure Area.

We have 131 entrants for the Caper which at the end of May 2014 was 128.  Janet R provides the hamper for the raffle prize but not the bits to go in it and Members were asked to provide suitable items for the hamper and to see Janet and John after the meeting to pick up some raffle tickets which they could sell before the event.  Adrian stressed that the advertisements and raffle prizes were what made the money for the charity. 

Jane said that there was a technical hitch with the regalia as the proposed new suppliers, Stroud Signs, had not responded to her telephone calls or emails.  She would be looking at two further companies as potential suppliers.


It was then time for Mo and Diana to do the rounds and fleece the Members of their money.  They did a splendid job selling the raffle tickets netting £40.00 for Club funds.  Diana purchases some of the raffle prizes but the Committee would like to thank Members who are always very generous in donating items for the monthly raffle.




March 2015 Newsletter No 78

Brian wished everyone a ‘good evening’ saying that our Secretary had come a long way from his retirement home to be with us as a presentation was being given by Allsorts.  He then handed over to Adrian briefly before Ruth Davey from Allsorts was given the microphone.  Adrian said that nominations for new Committee Members were zero but perhaps before the AGM in April he would receive some responses.  The Caper accounts for year end March 2015 were on the website should anyone be interested in checking them out.

Ruth thanked the Club for inviting her along and explained that she was the Fundraising Manager for Allsorts but had only been in the post for 3 months this being her first presentation.  Allsorts caters for families with children 0-24 years of age with disabilities or additional needs, they do not ask about the medical history and will take children with or without a diagnosis.  Siblings of children with disabilities are very often forgotten so a sibling group has been formed, they also have a grandparent group and this will be featured in Cotswold Life.

At the present time Allsorts cater for roughly 180 families which represents 650 people and besides a toy library they have youth clubs, youth activities and many other events in the Stroud and Cam area.

There was a short DVD of the children participating in various activities which was really interesting but Terry had to come to the rescue as there was a problem with the sound quality.

Allsorts work closely with special schools in the area, the Shrubberies being one and also St Roses where they make use of the hydrotherapy pool.

The children are looking forward to being involved with the Caper and flagging the cars off at the start of the run.  A large group of them will be having a ‘Pedal a Bike Away’ Family trip in the Forest of Dean on the day of the Caper and hopefully will be able to join us at the end of the day.  Ruth is a professional photographer and will be taking photographs and doing PR coverage of the event.  She will also bring someone in to do a press release which will be beneficial to everyone.

Brian thanked Ruth for her presentation and asked if she wished to stay on a bit for the rest of the meeting to which she was more than happy, much to the amazement of our Members.

The last Sunday lunch before the start of the Tuesday evening runs has been organised by Eddy and Diana and will be at the Waggon & Horses Hucclecote, the usual 12.30pm for 1pm eat.  Eddy only required numbers for the restaurant.

Adrian said that 22 members were going on the Bournemouth trip and that we had taken over the hotel for the weekend.  We could arrive any time after 3pm and he had booked a table for 7.30pm for our evening meal.  As the hotel was fully booked Les and Carol had to make other arrangements but they will be joining us in the evening.

Mike said that 11 Members had booked for the Tewkesbury trip to his friend’s garage but there was still room for another 6.

Drive it day on the 26th April is the time to dust of our MGs and is also St Roses Wheelnuts Show.  Adrian asked Trev if he would arrange the Club Stand in the hope of winning the cup once again, unfortunately there is a reduction in numbers this year.

Adrian asked young Wakefield to tell us about the first run of this year which will be on the 28th April and Geoff said we would be starting from The Glider Café at Aston Down Airfield with the first car away at 6.15pm.  We could choose our food on arrival at the pub!

The 3rd Tetbury Car Show in on the 6th September and Adrian asked for a show of hands to see if we would be attending.  The decision was yes.

Trev reported that the Caper is well under way, with Paul doing an excellent job with the route.  Adrian said that the more money we get the better and asked if everyone in the room could get an advertisement, e.g. from their hairdresser/barber etc or provide a raffle prize.  The raffle tickets will be ready to sell in April.  Philip had supplied a case of wine (will it still be around for the 5th July).

We have 112 entrants which is the same figure as at the end of April 2014.  The Committee were asked if there was a cut off for numbers, no real cut off but possibly 200.  Cut-off date for the advertisements is the first week in June.

Terry and Liz were presented with a bottle of wine as they had come up with the best slogan for the Caption of Teresa in a bird cage. ‘Only a bird in a gilded cage’.

Philip asked if the magnetic stickers were available as it was the start of the season for runs, Adrian hoped we would have them at the April meeting, and explained that the supplier had been ill.

Lionel asked if a letter could be sent from the Club to the organisers of the Stoneleigh Show as once again this year parking was a fiasco.

There was no other business so Mo and Diana circulated through the members taking their money for the raffle

February 2015 Newsletter No 77


Brian welcomed the Members to the meeting apologising for the lateness of the start.  The first item on the agenda, provided by our Secretary from his office in Bournemouth, was a volunteer to take on the organisation of the Xmas meal.  There were no takers and Brian suggested that Tony and Jane had done too good a job in the past, so we would be returning the Lillibrook Golf Club once again. Tony said that he would ring the Golf Club and ask them to ‘ink’ us in. Jane said she had two venues in mind for 2016, should anyone wish to take on the job, one was a restaurant with ample car parking in Cirencester and the other Minchinhampton Golf Club. 

A little in advance but the April meeting would be the AGM and Members were asked to think about nominations.  If anyone was interested in standing or would like to nominate a Member for one of the offices ie Chairman, Secretary or Treasurer would they please let Adrian know.  The pre-audited Club and Caper Accounts would be on the website by the 31st March for Members to peruse before the AGM.

Sue reported that we were still solvent and that the Membership fee was being kept at £10.00 per car and would be due on the 1st April.   Should anyone wish to pay before that date she would be willing to accept their money.  The password for the secure area would change at this time.

Brian then handed over to Laurence as Adrian was staying put in the old people’s home in Bournemouth.  Rumour has it that he will be putting in an appearance later in the year which will be at a meeting in person and not via a video link!!

Laurence said that the next Club event was his and Jane’s Sunday lunch on the 22nd February at Fagin’s Brookethorpe.   There was a choice of a carvery or a meal from the menu. 

At the March meeting there would be a presentation by Allsorts our chosen charity for this year,  so we would hope that there would be a good turnout.

Eddy would be organising the March Sunday lunch but Eddy was not willing to divulge where that would be.  I think that he and Diana are still doing the rounds of the local pubs sampling the goodies before making a final decision!

Mike had firmed up the visit to his friends garage in Tewkesbury on the 15th April and in order that the correct number of ‘goody bags’ were supplied asked that Members let him know whether they were definitely attending.

Laurence mentioned that the 26th April was not only ‘drive it day’ but St Roses Show and anyone interested in attending the show should email Adrian with their car details. Adrian also needed to know who of the Members would be attending the South Cerney Steam Fair on the 2nd August as this information was needed fairly soon by the organisers of the show.

Laurence and Jane had been to the new M5 Services for a talk by the Chairman which they found very interesting.   Local producers are encouraged to sell their products at the services which is for the benefit of the local community.  The Chairman is willing to give a talk either at the Gala Club or at the services and it was unanimously agreed that a visit on a Club night to the services would be the best option.  They will provide us with an area for our cars and Laurence will look into having our June meeting there.

Steve will do a route via a visit to Penderyn Distillery, the home of Welsh Whisk, on our away trip to Llanerchindda Farm in May, unfortunately it will only be the passengers who can sample the whisky!

Trev said that the Caper is in for a bumper year, at the last count we had 87 entrants which is 32% above February last year.  The route provided by Paul has been tried and tested with just a few minor tweaks.  We are still looking for adverts and raffle prizes.

The 14th June is the date for the marshals and pink ladies to try out the 100ish miles route with a 10am start at Speech House. 

Brian gave a brief explanation of the Caper for the benefit of our new Members.  Gethin did point out that there was no mention on the web site where the Caper finished and Brian said that this would be relayed to Adrian for rectification.

As we had had an enjoyable Sunday lunch at the Haresfield Beacon Hotel Trev suggested that we could hold a skittles evening there and after asking for a show of hands Trev will be checking out when this event can take place.

Jane G mentioned that we would be looking for another supplier of clothing as our present lady was retiring.  She did however have a polo shirt, cap and beany which were surplus to requirements should anyone wish to make an offer.  

We were pleased that Derrick and Pete have taken on the task of organising the Teddy Bears Picnic which will be on the 19th July.  Derrick said that it will be run on the same lines as Steve with a short run from Minchinhampton Common returning there for the picnic.  Details would be supplied at the next meeting.

Steve and Marion were thinking of attending the MG Era Day at Brooklands on the 12th April should anyone wish to join them, although this clashes with the MGB Register Run from Milletts Farm, which is popular with our Members.

We were well into our meeting when a gentleman crept in and joined Pete and I am pleased to say that he decided to join, so a warm welcome Noel Pockett.

As there was no speaker or quiz Brian semi closed the meeting so that Members could socialise whilst Mo and Diana fleeced them for the monthly raffle.



January 2015 Newsletter No 76


As we had not met since November Brian wished Members a Happy Xmas and New Year.  Members no doubt would have noticed that we did not have a stand-in Secretary this month as Adrian was in attendance.  He and Rita had come up for a few days from Bournemouth so that they could attend this meeting, plus the Caper and Main Committee meetings during the week and more importantly from Adrian’s point of view Gloucester v Saracens on the Friday evening.

We had two visitors Graham Townsend and Rob Cotterill who I am pleased to say signed up for Membership during the break.  We were also pleased to welcome our latest Member Alan Crick.

Adrian reported that all the rooms at the hotel for the Bournemouth trip at the end of March had been taken and if anyone was interested in visiting the Motor Bike Museum the run that he had planned would finish here, but that the museum closes at 4pm with entry fee at approximately £6.50.

Once again it would be ‘Drive it Day’ on the 26th April which is the St Roses Show and Members were asked to let Adrian know whether they were interested in attending so that the necessary parking arrangements could be made.

Laurence, Adrian’s stand in, had noticed two mistakes on the diary listing, there were two mentions of the ‘Moor to Sea Run’ and that Llanerchindda  had been spelt incorrectly.  It proves that no one is perfect and caused amusement.

For the last four years we had had a very important event, the Teddy Bear’s Picnic.  Steve had been the organiser of this and was hoping that someone else would take over the reins and organise it this year.  Adrian was looking for volunteers and  explained that it would mean organising a run of approximately 30miles to start and finish at Minchinhampton Common  were we would all meet and weather permitting have a picnic.  He said it would be a shame to let this event go as it meant a gathering of the families old and young.  It did not have to take place in July as in the past, the organiser could have a date of his choosing.  The picnic would be discussed again at the February meeting.

Adrian and Rita had their annual trip to Prague in 2014 and were organising another visit in November-December this year.   He had 14 Members who had expressed an interest and was capping the number at 16.  The cost would be £560.00 per couple.

Although South Cerney Annual Vintage Transport Show isn’t until August Adrian wanted to remind Members who might be interested so that we could get the entry in in good time.

Adrian also mentioned the website Members Area which shows runs during the year and suggested that Members advise him of any runs they may be attending through the year so that he could update this site.  The password for this area will be changed at the beginning of April so Members were reminded to pay their subscription on time if they wanted to use the site.

Mike Pollock has been asked to arrange a visit to his friend’s garage in Tewkesbury for a techno talk and the agreed date was Wednesday 15th April, this is to be confirmed at the next meeting.  Mike said,  as previously that no charge would be  made for the talk but a bucket would be put out for a donation and his friend has said that any monies collected will be given to our Caper Charity.  An expression of thanks was given.

The Caper Route is looking good, Paul has been doing a grand job.  Laurence needs help to get adverts and we need a main raffle prize. Members were asked to lean on as many companies/people as they could.

Brian had arranged to visit and have discussions with Allsorts Charity the week following the meeting.

Adrian had emailed 500 previous car entrants and 100 Club Secretaries of MG Clubs to promote our run so some bright spark worked out that we could have 1,000 entries!!!!!

There would be a prize for the further or farthest travel and one for the Club with most entries.

Brian informed those Members who had not attended our Xmas Bash that we’d had a super do thanking Tony and Jane for their hard work.  Tony has provisional booked the same venue for this year but would be quite willing to pass over the task to any other Member who would be willing to take it on.  Members were asked to think about this and let Brian have their thoughts at the February meeting.

The magnetic strips have been agreed and the order placed, the charge per strip will be round about £3.00.

Members were once again asked if they could make a suggestion or arrange a speaker after the general meeting, there were three months available.  One thought was the History of Belly Dancing and Teresa asked if the hall had a defibulator given the age of the Members!!!!

For once Brian and Gethin were not winners of the Caption Contest, which this month was Paul Drewett.  Well done.

Laurence passed round the menu from Fagins Steak House Brookethorpe which is the venue for the February Sunday lunch.  There is a carvery but you can also order off the menu.

After the raffle and comfort break Adrian provided us with a quiz, it was a story using names of cars and vans, past and present with obviously these details missing.  There were 45 spaces to fill in, the winners being Steve and Marion with 25 points.  Adrian presented them with a bottle of wine.  One more short quiz and the meeting was closed so that we could socialise.



November 2014 Newsletter No 75

Brian opened the meeting once Members were settled and introduced Adrian’s stand-in.  Laurence has taken on the responsibility, when Adrian is not available, to keep Brian in order and to feed him the Agenda for the evening.  As there was very little for Brian to comment on at the beginning of the meeting he handed the microphone to Laurence for the diary updates.

Laurence asked Members to bear with him as he was still on ‘L-plates!  The 23rd November was Adrian and Rita’s Sunday lunch at The Lamb, Eastcombe for which 29 members had signed up but there were more spaces as the pub could take 35 with ease.  Adrian had managed to obtain a special deal of £15.00 for two courses.

At the January meeting Adrian would be doing a quiz with a difference.    Members were asked for suggestions for next year and Mike Pollock said that a friend of his who has a garage in Tewkesbury gives talks on mechanical issues which would interest the male Members.  There is also the benefit of buying real parts for the classic cars.  He makes no charge but any donation would be welcome which would be given to his chosen charity.  There was a good show of hands for a visit and Mike will check out details for the January meeting.

Laurence could arrange a visit to Network Rail in the summer, a winter visit would prove difficult due to the leaves on the line!!!

There were several members who had put their names down for the Xmas Meal at the Lillibrook Golf Course and were not at the meeting and Tony was anxious to contact them for their menu choice.  Telephone numbers were given to Tony.

Tony and Jane would appreciate pre-wrapped raffle prizes for the Xmas meal.

Pete and Derrick were attending the Classic Car Show at the NEC at the weekend and wondered if any other Members were going.  Brian said unfortunately he couldn’t go as his Mum said ‘he has to take her to hospital’.

Jane has now taken on the responsibility of ordering the Club clothing.

Adrian is arranging a trip to France in the autumn of 2015 and so far there are only 9 cars going, to get a ferry discount he needs 10+.   As BT were unable to connect his telephone/broad band line immediately he unfortunately had to make a visit to Weatherspoon’s to get onto the
Wi-Fi!!!  I don’t think this was a problem for him though as it is one of his favourite haunts!

Our esteem Chairman Brian was the winner of the Caption Contest with ‘Poo Bear loves honey’.

Brian said that the Committee had been in discussion with purchasing a magnetic strip to attach to the rear of the cars when attending other Clubs events and this was put to the Members who all thought it would be a good idea.  Prices will be checked out and details will be given at a later meeting.

He then suggested it was time to recharge our glasses and have a short comfort break. Although we were a little thin on the ground Mo and Diana managed to extract £29.00 from the Members for the raffle. 

It was then down to Tony to give us instruction on his map reading exercise.  We had split up into groups of 3s and 4s with maps, rulers and pencils and were given 5 exercises to complete which we all found entertaining and instructive.

Tony was thanked for organising the brain teaser which I think I can safely say we all enjoyed.

Brian then closed the meeting which was the last of 2014.


October 2014 Newsletter No 74

Trev very kindly look a few notes of the meeting as I was away on one of my sabbaticals.   As we had guests from Germany visiting at approximately 8.45pm the idea was to start the Club meeting at 7.30pm but true to form it did not get underway until 7.50pm due to the complications of computing!!  Of Members present 6 brought their MGs.

Brian welcomed members and brought the question of a charity for next year’s Caper to their attention.  There was a choice of two:-  Allsorts suggested by Adrian and Family Haven by Laurence.  After a short debate a vote was taken and this year’s charity will be Allsorts the result was 15-9.

The first Sunday lunch of this year will be on the 26th October at The Apple Tree Minsterworth organised by Tim and Louise.  Menu choices are not required.

At the November meeting Tony will be demonstrating once again a map reading exercise which we have all enjoyed in the past.  It would be useful if members could bring with them a current
OS Map 163.

Adrian and Rita were taking orders for their Sunday lunch on the 23rd November at the Lamb Inn Eastcombe.   As there were no takers for the January lunch Trev volunteered.

Trev informed the meeting that the Caper Committee for 2015 had been formed and tasks had been allocated.  We had lost two of the stalwarts, Steve and Rob, but had been lucky enough to replace them with Brian and Paul. The run will concentrate on the Forest of Dean this year and the finish of Speech House has been confirmed.  Adrian has already received seven entries.

It was then the task of Adrian to give his web site presentation which was appreciated by all Members.  A note of interest was that we had had 128,000 hits!!!!!!  with visits by the USA, Canada and Israel to name but a few.  The web site is self-financing.

Mo and Diana did their usual raffle and netted £40.00 for Club funds.

The German contingent then joined us for a friendly natter, pressies were exchanged and everyone seemed to enjoy the socialising.


September 2014 Newsletter No 73


Brian thought it was a very good turnout in view of the sunny weather outside but it was pointed out by some bright spark that as the curtains were drawn we were unable to see daylight!!  Keith and Julia Hawker, new Members, were welcomed by Brian to the Gloucestershire Premier MG Club and he hoped that they would enjoy the meeting and come back.  What he wasn’t aware of was that Keith and Julia had already had a taster of our hospitality at the Tetbury Classic Car Show the previous week.

It was explained by Brian that Alabare had already received the Cotswold Caper cheque for £3904.00+, but an official presentation should be made with photographs being taken with the Caper Committee.  Brian presented a humungous cheque, which had been created by him and Teresa, to Kenneth who represented Alabare.  Kenneth expressed a big thank you on behalf of Alabare explaining that our large donation would be used by the end of the month as they had a 8 bedded house in Longlevens waiting to accommodate forces personnel.  

There is a possibility of a further cheque from another source which is being negotiated by one of our Members.

Moving on rapidly after Kenneth’s departure Brian handed over to Adrian who asked Tony for final details of their River Cruise Fish and Chip Supper on the 14th September.   Members were to meet at 4pm at Greasy Joes Cirencester for the start of the rally to the river.  For those who wished to go direct to Lechlade Tony had maps.  He also asked if Members could, providing the weather was good, take their MGs which would make a lovely line up on the banks of the river.

Adrian’s favourite event of the year was on the 20th September, the visit to Hook Norton Brewery. Although deposits were requested at the August meeting Philip said this was no longer required and Members could pay the full price on the day.  They were to check the website for the post code.  As it was the Sudeley Castle visit the next day they would have to be very liberal with their drinking!  The Castle visit, which was an all-day event with entrance to the Castle included, was well supported.

The last run of this year has been organised by Eddy and Diana on the 23rd, meeting at the Birdlip Viewpoint Barrow Wake with the first car away at 6pm. 

At the October meeting two major events were happening, one a website presentation by Adrian and the other visitors from abroad.  One of our Members asked if our German visitors would be buying the beer for the evening!!  Adrian offered to arrange the car parking and asked if Members could bring their MGs, he also said for the benefit of our visitors he would do his presentation in German!!!!!!  I think perhaps he should keep to his own native language.

Advance notice:   At the May meeting 2015 there will be a talk on the Austin Tunnels in WW2.  Members were asked at this stage if they had any suggestions for entertainment for next year. 

Last month Adrian mentioned that several members from the Basingstoke MG Club would be staying at the Rising Sun Hotel Cleevehill at the end of the month if we wished to make ourselves known and Richard Ward has kindly offered to do one of our runs for them.  Thank you Richard.

Jane Gulliford has taken over officially as regalia officer as Rita will shortly be moving south so should anyone be interested in purchasing any of the clothing would they speak to Jane.

Adrian was the winner of the Caption Contest of, as he put it, Brian and Lionel flirting, so presented himself with the bottle of wine.

There was no foreign jaunt this year but who knows we might get an invitation to Germany!  Adrian is looking at September 2015 for a possible visit to Arromanches (France).  As soon as he has researched accommodation, ferry crossings etc he will put a proposal to Members.

Brian asked Members to think about a local Charity for next year’s Caper and to email their suggestions to Adrian providing details with who they are, what they do and why we should support them.  The Committee will then select three charities and it will be put to a vote at a future meeting.

We now have car window stickers with the new logo, Members will be given one FOC but should they wish to purchase further stickers they will be 50p each. 

The official number for our Xmas Bash is 40 but Tony thinks we might be able to squeeze a couple more in.

Some very pleasant news was given just before the end of the meeting, Alastair and Louise (I believe they may be our youngest Members) had become engaged, so many congratulations to them and we hope we will all be invited to the wedding!!

Mo and Diana did a splendid job with the raffle, accumulating £38.00 from the Members.





August 2014 Newsletter No 72


Brian opened the meeting a little later than usual as Members seemed to be quite happy to socialise.  We had a visitor to the meeting who may well join at a later date and Brian welcomed him telling the Members that Eddy had come to look at us and was certain to be able to hear because of the loudspeaker system.  Keith had brought in a pile of ‘Enjoying MG’ which Members could take away as he had now finished with reading same.

There were two big birthdays coming up in August whereupon there was a groan from the back of the room.  John C was gaining an extra year, but was not expecting a telegram from the Queen for some time.  Lionel was also coming of age and Brian suggested that when he went to the bar he should put in an order for 48 pints of bitter.   It is hard to believe that they were on the verge of being 80 as they are both very active Members.  Birthday cards were passed to John and Lionel.

The microphone was then handed over to Adrian who stated that there were lots of diary events closely packed together this month.

Tony’s Pershore Plum Festival was to start from the Gala Club at 9.15am on Monday 25th providing we could obtain permission from the Manager of the Club.  Adrian took on the task of sorting this out.  For those who knew the area they could meet at Eckington Bridge at 9.45am where we would form a convoy to go into the show.  The entry fee was £3.00 and Tony would collect this on the day.  Pete and Derrick had not yet informed Tony of their registration numbers.

Keith’s evening run on Tuesday 26th August would also start at the Gala Club with first cars away at 6.15pm.  20 Members had booked so far but if anyone else wished to go them the more the merrier.  Adrian had not given Keith his menu choice, the reason being that his wife hadn’t told him what he was to have!!!!   If Members believed that then they would believe anything.

On the 7th September it would be the Tetbury Classic Car Show which some Members attended last year for the first time.  Adrian said the organisers support Allsorts the Charity not the sweets and had 4 Members show an interest.

Tony had firmed up the date of Sunday 14th September for the boat trip at Lechlade and said that a form would be going round for Members to complete if they were interested.  A little run would be provided and details would be put on the website, although as he (Tony) is not very conversant with the computer, he might end up on Adrian’s doorstep with the details.   The meeting place would be Greasy Joes in Cirencester and he would like the £18.00 per person which includes the boat trip and fish and chip supper up front in cash at the September meeting.  It would be a 2 hour trip with seasick tablets provided.

Gethin informed the Members who were going on the BMH on the 17th September that the MGB shells would be built on that day which should be very interesting.  A sharp start at Whitney of 10.30am is required.  There is no charge for the tour but their choice of charity is McMillan and it was suggested that each Member leaves a donation of £10.00.

Adrian said that 3 days after Gethin’s trip is the favourite tour of the year Philip’s brewery trip to Hook Norton, where there are 7 beers for the tasting.  The cost is £9.50 per person and a deposit of £10.00 per car is required at the September meeting.  One of the Members thought it would be a good idea to hire a coach in view of the fact that there was beer on offer, Adrian would ask Mike (our coach man) if this is possible and also the costs.

Several Members were going to be attending an inaugural show at Sudeley Castle on the 21st September.  Names of the goers, Adrian thought he had better rephrase this, were needed and also details of the car passengers.

A contingent of Members from the Basingstoke Club would be staying at the Rising Sun, Cleeve Hill on the 26-28th September should any of our Members wish to pop along and introduce themselves.

At our October meeting a bunch of German MG enthusiasts will be looking in on us and Gethin suggested it would be a nice gesture to use our MGs that evening.  Apparently two of the German MGs were purchased locally, Minchinhampton and Bristol and they would like to track down their history.

Last months Caption Contest was won by Brian and Richard was asked to present the bottle of wine to him. 

Adrian explained that he and Rita would be moving to Bournemouth in the not too distant future and there were two choices to make regarding his position.  He could continue as Secretary, as most of his work is on the computer, and this can be undertaken from almost anywhere or, a new Secretary could be elected.  It was a unanimous decision that Adrian stays as Secretary and Laurence agreed to act as his assistant attending meetings on his behalf.

Jane G has volunteered to take over the clothing orders etc from Rita.

Tony had a list of Members who were down for the Christmas Dinner and said that the numbers were limited to 40. 

Pete had volunteered to be the Area Representative for the Octagon Car Club and after discussions with our Committee it had been decided that their Members could come and join in with our meetings which might encourage a few older cars to the Club.  At present we have 3.

Before the Teddy Bears’ Picnic some Members met at the Jet Age Museum for the start of the run and to look around the Museum.  A collection was taken as it was free entry and Steve informed us that he had collected £67.00, which was an excellent amount.

A representation from Alabare will be at the September meeting to receive the cheque from the Cotswold Caper Fund.

Brian suggested that everyone recharged their glasses before Richard produced his quiz.  It was really good to see Jill, Richard’s wife at the meeting, but unfortunately there was a reason for this.  Richard had been injured very badly by a racing car when marshalling and had bravely or perhaps obstinately decided to attend the meeting as he had arranged the quiz.   On a lighter note Adrian did suggest that Richard should have ducked to avoid injury.

Mo and Diana excelled themselves this month with the raffle, the takings were £55.00!

The meeting convened and Richards’ quiz was all about the history of the MG of which there were 26 questions.   The highest scorers with 13 points were Tim, Geoff and Mandy.

Brian thanked Richard for his enlightening quiz, but the lack of knowledge by the Members was somewhat embarrassing!

July 2014 Newsletter No 71


As Brian was going to do a presentation on the newly purchased video/audio equipment we arrived early to help him set it up and to make sure it worked correctly.

Members started arriving and Brian opened the meeting at 8pm explaining that our Secretary was basking on a beach somewhere down on the South coast but had as usual left full instructions on what needed to be said on the events front.  Brian was pleasantly surprised that there was such a good turn out as the weather was beautifully warm.

Before running through the agenda Brian thanked all Members who were involved in organising the Caper, the helpers on the day, all Members who were responsible for getting the adverts and raffle prizes and also those who entered the event.  He explained that a report on the Caper would come a little later in the meeting.

The forthcoming events are the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Sunday 20th July.  Steve re-iterated that we would meet at the Jet Age Museum Staverton where the first car away would be at 11am for a 35 mile run finishing on Minchinhampton Common where all Members would meet for a picnic.  If anyone was interested in looking around the Museum which is FOC, but a donation would be welcome, then Steve suggested being there for the opening at 10am.  In past years there have been three and sometimes four generations of families attending the picnic.  There was a good show of hands in support of the event.

It was noted that we had two new Members hiding at the back of the room and Brian welcomed Geoffrey and Jennie Bartlett to the meeting.  I would mention that they had been on the Caper run and were signed up as Members, together with two other couples, on the day.

Liz and Terry’s evening run is on the 22nd July and for the benefit of Geoffrey and Jennie, Terry explained it would be a run of approximately 35 miles mainly along roads on the west of the Severn finishing at a hostelry.   We would meet in a layby on the Tewkesbury Road Cheltenham (A4019) with the first car away at 6.15pm.

South Cerney Show on Sunday 3rd August is already fully booked and although Greasy Joes in Cirencester is closed we will still make use of their car park for meeting up at 9.15am.

At the August meeting Richard Ward will be doing an MG Quiz, so get swotting.

A trip to the Hook Norton Brewery where you can taste nine beers for a charge of £9.50 has been provisionally booked for the 20th September.  There was a good show of hands, so arrangements will now be made to firm up the date.

For those attending the Pershore Plum Festival on the 25th August Tony needed the car registration numbers as a pass was needed for entry with a small charge of £3.00 being made.  It was proposed to start from the Gala Club at 9.15am and if we became separated would meet up at Eckington so that we could follow Tony into the designated spot.

Tony would put details of the boat trip from Lechlade on the 14th September on the web-site once he had firmed up the details.  A fish and chip meal would be included in the price so watch the diary page if you are interested in going and email Tony.   Apparently he and Jane had good reports about this cruise, the fish and chips were excellent, but there were one of two little things that caused amusement one being that there were no lights in the toilet!  John then asked if oars were used.

If anyone was interested in the Christmas Bash at the Lilleybrook Golf Club on the evening of Saturday 13th December then they should let Tony know as the places were going fast.

Brian reported that we had 148 Caper entrants, eight  of which didn’t show up, one being our Member who had problems with his MG.  The route was just under 100 miles and it was amazing how long the entrants took to do the run and how many reached the end looking tired but happy .  This is the second largest entry that we have had since resurrecting the Cotswold Caper and the feedbacks so far have been positive.

Four of our Members have purchased shirts with the new logo but Brian refused to model his shirt for the benefit of our new Members, however one was removed from its’ package and it certainly looks the business.

Laurence had been given a voucher from a Lawn Treatment Company with a value of about £40.00 which he suggested was raffled separately to our monthly swindle with the proceeds going to the Caper Fund.  The result of this was £33.00.

Brian asked if there was any other business before the said raffles and Keith mentioned that his evening run on the 26th August would start from the Gala Club with the first car away at 6.15pm.  He had negotiated a 15% discount on the food provided there were twenty or over people eating.  There was also a new way of ordering the food, this would be by the number system, used in Chinese takeaways!!

Gethin has been loaned a MG3 from Warners and if any of our Members were interested they should contact Claire for the chance to take up the offer of a 24 hour loan.

A comfort break of 15 minutes was taken.

Brian had put together an excellent presentation on various car manufacturers advertising which dated from the 1950s to the present time.  There seemed to be a theme running through i.e. scantily clad young women with the most up-to-date one being the Kylie Minogue video.  Everyone, including the ladies, seemed to enjoy it which was good as Brian had put a lot of time and effort into it to find the best bits that would amuse the Members.

June 2014 Newsletter No 70

I was once again absent from the Club Meeting due to the call of the wilds of Scotland which we had not visited before, the scenery was spectacular and we had a good tens day..  I have however been supplied with some notes so here goes with a brief Newsletter for June.  Forgive me if it is not completely correct.

Brian welcomed Members and after a brief update on the Caper introduced the gentlemen who would be giving the presentation on behalf of Alabare.  Unfortunately the person who runs the Gloucester hostel, which we will be supporting, had been taken ill but Rob Stewart from the Bristol hostel stepped in at the last minute, suitably assisted by Ken who is the Housing Support Office at Gloucester and Chris Cole a veteran who has been helped by Alabare. 

Rob said that Alabare was formed to in 1991 to support vulnerable and marginalised people in the community to gain independence and enable them to move on with their lives.  All veterans must have served in the British Armed Forces and referrals come from The Royal British Legion, prisons and other charities.
The 4 bedroomed house which was opened 8 months ago in Gloucester has already helped veterans and only this month Alabare have been given the green light to open a second house for veterans at Longlevens for a further 8 residents.

Alabare is dependent on donations and voluntary workers and Rob explained to David Kear, who asked what the volunteer workers would be required to do, that it was dependant on what the house residents needed at a given time.

Ken talked briefly about their Client group and in answer to a question said the project was open to both men and women, but he himself had only known one woman who had received help.

Chris said Alabare helped him get back on his feet and to train for a better qualification after he got into financial difficulties when his father had been taken ill abroad.  He now has his own flat and is in employment.

Rob thanked the Club for choosing their Charity for the 2014 Caper and for inviting them along to give a presentation.

Brian thanked the trio for their presentation whereupon they took their leave and the meeting re-commenced.

Adrian ran through the forth coming June events which were the Caper rehearsal run for the Marshals on the 15th   -   Gethins’ trip to the bus museum on the 22nd and Richard Wards’ evening run on the 24th.  During July there will be Steves’ Teddy Bears Picnic and Liz and Terrys’ evening run on the 22nd. 

Tony and Jane are proposing to organise a boat trip from Lechlade and the provisional date for this is the 14th September.  Members are reminded to check the web site for these details.  There is also the Pershore Plum Festival on August Bank Holiday Monday.

The Caper entry was at 139 slightly down on last year and the Caper route guide was due to start printing on the 16th June.  Members were thanked for donating the raffle prizes and hamper goodies.  Janet had been given the task of collecting the money and raffle ticket stubs and she had also persuaded her daughter to donate a voucher for a beauty therapy treatment.  This was for Club Members only with the raffle being drawn on the June Club night.  Mo was asked to draw the winning ticket and much to her surprise she was the lucky recipient.  Well done Mo.  The raffle raised £45.00 for the Caper Funds.

Our raffle ladies also did very well raising £39.35 for Club Funds – not sure where the 35p came from though.



May 2014 Newsletter No 69



Whilst on my annual R & R in sunny Jersey Trev took copious notes of the May meeting so that there would be continuity with the Newsletter.

Brian welcomed the Members commenting that it was a very large turnout no doubt due to the fact that they had heard about Liz’s quizzes on the grapevine!

Eddy had checked the Club accounts and these had been accepted as correct with a healthy balance in the bank to start the New Year.

Adrian ran through the events for the coming months with Brian and Teresa’s evening run on the 20th May starting from the Gala Club at 6pm.  The run would encompass both sides of the River Severn.  The Sunday visit to the Bus Museum on the 22nd June would start at Seven Springs at 10am with John C leading the way.  Gethin who is organising the event will meet us at the lunch stop.

The numbers for the Cotswold Caper are about 22% down on this time last year, but we do have 114 entries at the moment with two months to go.

There was a break for the raffle and the girls managed to fleece Members of £40.00 which was an excellent amount.

The evening was then handed over to Liz for her quiz on the River Severn.  The audio visual presentation was a revelation with Liz leading the Members through the questions backed up by excellent video coverage.  Members all learnt a lot about the River Severn with the team of Steve, Marion, Laurence and Jane winning with 16 points.  Thank you Liz.

It seems as though the Club has moved into the 21st century with their equipment, thanks must go to the Committee for organising this.


April 2014 Newsletter No 68


Brian welcomed everyone to the April meeting saying that as Ian Pogson our speaker for the evening was already set up to go we would start with the AGM, which would be a short event, followed by Ian after which would be a comfort break with raffle.  We would then open the meeting of the New Year with new officers!!!!!

The minutes from the 2013 AGM were read out for the benefit of the Members and as there were no objections from the floor they were adopted.

The Chairman’s report from Brian said that we had had another successful year, thanking the Committee for all the work they put in to keeping the Club on the road.  An extra big thank you was given to Adrian for the hours spent as Secretary and his skills on the web-site.

The number of Members remain strong and once again have welcomed new Members through the year.

The Club would not exist if it were not for the effort put in by the Members in organising runs, Sunday lunches, talks, quizzes and also to those Members who supported these events.  Members should give themselves a ‘pat on the back’.

The Cotswold Caper was again a great day out and raised a little over £4,500 for the James Hopkins Trust, which is a substantial sum for a small Club.   Thanks to all who were involved whether helping on the day, obtaining prizes, adverts, sponsorship, selling raffle tickets before or on the day, the list goes on.  The feedback was very good and the 2014 Caper is already booking up and I hope that you all have the 6th July boldly marked in your diaries.

Brian then handed over to Adrian for his report as Secretary.  April 2014 was a busy month with Geoff organising a visit to Wadsworths Brewery which just happened to coincide with Adrian’s birthday.  Chris organised his signpost rallye and Geoff and Mandy also organised a Tuesday evening run, with St Roses Wheelnuts finishing off the April events.

The away visits were Llanerchindda in May organised by Steve, The Haynes Motor Museum weekend in August, the Isle of Wight in September and Abbey Cwm Hir (LlandrindodWells) in November all organised by Adrian and Rita.

Through the summer months, April to September, we had the Tuesday evening runs which were well supported with Eddy and Diana and Terry and Liz arranging their very first runs, long may they continue.  Sunday lunches from October to March were also very popular.

It was the second year of the Teddy Bear’s picnic and this was attended by 14 MGs, several non-MGs and of course the compulsory teddy bears.  In August we attended South Cerney Steam Fair and on Bank Holiday Monday we had our cars on show at the Motor Museum in Bourton-on-the-Water.  This was followed by a visit to the Morgan factory in September and the Tetbury Car Show which was a new event for the organisers of the show and obviously us.  We had a visit to the Museum at RAF Cosford in October which unfortunately Adrian and Rita were unable to attend due to being across the water in Australia.

Tony and Jane organised the Christmas Meal at the Lilleybrook Golf Club and as it was such a good evening and location they had been given the task of booking this venue for 2014.

There was a skittles match against the A35 Club at the Stirrup Cup, our favourite haunt for skittles, in February.

Adrian thanked the Members who had organised all the various events and those who had made it a success by attending.

Sue as Treasurer asked Members if they had checked out the accounts on the web-site and asked for questions from the floor, fortunately there were none.  Eddy had agreed to fully check the accounts which he would do before the May meeting so that they could be signed off as correct (or otherwise).  The Caper accounts had already been agreed as correct.

Steve proposed that the Club adopt the new logo which had been running alongside the old for some time.  Members had been given the choice of which logo they had printed on their clothing and Rita as the one in charge of ordering the sweatshirts etc was asked what percentage choose the new, to which she replied about 98%.  After a lengthy debate Brian asked for a show of hands and the new logo won hands down (or up).  The new logo has now been adopted.

As there had been no nominations for Committee Officers or Members, Richard proposed re-election of the serving Committee seconded by Lawrence. 

Brian thanked the members for their support and closed the 2014 AGM meeting in what he said was record time, 25 minutes!

Brian then introduced Ian Pogson, Programme Manager at MG Longbridge who suggested that Members should have a comfort visit or charge their glasses before he started as he did tend to go overtime.  We knew from this that it would be a lively and interesting talk especially when he noticed that there were ladies in the audience and if anyone wanted to test drive the MG that he had with him Members would have to leave their driving licence and their wives as collateral.  Richard asked ‘do you keep them’ referring to the wives bit!!

Ian split his talk into two parts, the techno babble and life in China.  The men were interested in the techno part and the ladies took more interest when Ian showed a couple of films taken during his time in Shanghai. 

Our thanks were given to Ian who then took his leave.

After a short break for the raffle the meeting re-convened with Adrian running through the diary of events.  The first evening run would be Tuesday 22nd from The Old Lodge on Minchinhampton Common and as Geoff was not in attendance members were asked to check the web-site.   Adrian said that there was good support for the St Roses Wheelnuts Show on the 27th April and as Trev gave us the winning Club stand last year he would be in charge of organising again this year, so could Members be on site at 9.30am for Trev to tell them where to go! 

Brian and Teresa are behind with the planning of their May run but details will be on the web site very soon.

Gethin’s bus run in June is progressing and details of this will be on the web site.  Liz and Terry have their July run all sorted and although the roads are no longer under water they are  very muddy but still passable, but hopefully by the time the MGs go out in force the roads will be dry.

Adrian said that Liz would be doing a quiz at the May meeting on the River Severn which will have us in floods of tears!!

The Caper route has been finalised, there are 96 entrants to date which is lower than last year and an email has been sent to various Club Secretaries to try and drum up a little more support.  Janet and John have a hamper as one of the major raffle prizes which needs filling and Members were asked to bring along goodies to put in it.

Lawrence is in charge of the adverts and he is also looking for 12 volunteer marshalls for the day.

The Annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic in July will start from the Jet Age Museum at Staverton with the first car away at 11am.  Steve informed us that it is free admission to the museum which opens as 10am.  A teddy bear is essential and Rita will sell you an MG Bear if one is required.

David and Janet Glew celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary this month but unfortunately were not at the meeting to receive warm congratulations from the Members present and more importantly not able to buy the drinks.

Adrian said that someone else had a birthday to celebrate this month referring to Rita so we all sang ‘happy birthday’.  Adrian admitted that he had not as yet bought a card! It was also Brian Wilson’s birthday, so he was wished a happy birthday.

The meeting closed at 10.15pm later than usual.




March 2014 Newsletter No 67


Unfortunately our Chairman had a relapse after the February meeting and was once again missing so Adrian took charge and after a short, sharp tussle with the microphone, from which he emerged semi-victorious, he apologised for Brian’s absence.  In his haste to get to the meeting to set up the sound system and projector for our Speaker Adrian had left the agenda on his printer so had to improvise, fortunately he did have the diary listings to which he could refer.

Adrian said that we would have the usual business followed by a short break for the raffle so that Tony Osborne would be able to give his presentation on Longbridge without restrictions on time.

Sunday lunch on the 23rd March organised by Tim and Louise will be in Hereford and it was suggested that as no one knew where the Harewood End Pub was situated, only Tim, then we should perhaps go in convoy. 

Although we are not supporting St Roses with the Caper run this year they will be giving us our usual ‘prime spot’ at their Wheelnuts Show on the 27th April.

Gethin said that there were 4 places left for the BMW Mini Factory trip on the 1st April, if he didn’t get the quota then the charge for the tour would be slightly increased.  He had also arranged a carvery meal on the return trip at the Evenlode Hotel.

On the 22nd June we are having a run out to the Bus and Morris Museum, where Gethin has obtained entry at a reduced fee.  We will have lunch at the Evenlode Hotel first, before going on to the Museum, Gethin has organised the run from Seven Springs with the help of John.

The Caption Contest was won by our Secretary’s wife, Rita and she was presented with the obligatory bottle of wine.

The April meeting will incorporate the AGM and Adrian asked if any Members were interested in standing for the Committee, the present Committee are willing to continue provided they are re-elected.   Members should email Adrian before the 8th April should they wish to be considered or if there are any questions they wished raised at the meeting.

The Club accounts will be put on the website before the AGM but not until the 7th April so that Members will have a chance to look at them in detail and raise any questions at the meeting.  The accounts will be audited during April but not before the AGM.

Geoff and Mandy will be organising the first run of the year on the 22nd April so let’s hope for a dry, warm night so we will be able to run with hoods down!

It was reported that we have 81 entries to date for the Caper, the route has been settled and all going according to plan, the long range forecast has even been checked!!!

Don’t forget to put a note in your diaries that the 27th April is ‘Drive it Day’.

We were very pleased to welcome Philip and Lionel back after several months of absence.

Diana ably assisted by Janet G as Mo was unwell, fleeced Members of their money for the raffle with the sum of £37.00 being collected.  It is very unusual for Mo to miss a meeting and we hope she will soon recover from her cold.

The meeting was re-convened and Tony Osborne gave a very interesting talk on the History of Longbridge and the connection with the MG.   The Austin Motor Company was formed in 1905 with the first car being completed in 1906.  In the first full year of production 120 cars were built with the first lorry being built in 1913.  The Company did their part in both world wars by building armoured cars, aeroplanes, and producing shells.  One Hermitage armoured car is on display in a museum in Germany.

Tony himself was an apprentice in 1972 being made redundant in July 2005, a very long service and he also drives an MGB.

Adrian thanked Tony for his very interesting talk especially as he had travelled from the Midlands to be with us.




February 2014 Newsletter No 66

Our Chairman, Brian, was back in harness after missing the January meeting due to illness.  A little belatedly he wished everyone a happy new year and introduced them to the new gismo in the form of a loud speaker system suggesting that Members might like to come up and have a go at singing ‘My Way’.  Needless to say there were no takers!  Jane suggested the purchase of this at the last meeting for which she was thanked, as it will be very useful not only on Club nights but at outside events for making announcements.

Attendance was far greater than was expected as the weather had been horrendous and there was also the chance that there would be flooding in Gloucester.
Brian asked the Treasurer if she had anything to say about the finances to which she replied we were still in the black even after the purchase of the new equipment.  Sue was a little reluctant to use the microphone.

The microphone was handed over to Adrian who had recently returned from Germany and Brian was a little surprised that they had let him come back.  Adrian was however struggling with a very nasty cough but soldiered on with his report.

Coming up this month is the Skittles Match against the A35 Club on the 20th so hopefully our Members will have been practising so that we win.  Eddy and Diana’s Sunday lunch on the 23rd is at The High Orchard near Gloucester Quays where there is a choice of 1, 2 or 3 courses at a good price.  Meet midday for a 12.30pm sit down.

At the March meeting we will have a presentation on Longbridge and the speaker informed Adrian that he is able to speak for 1½ hours but has agreed to keep it to ¾ hour!!  I think our lady Members breathed a sigh of relief.

We all thought Gethin was joking when he said he would arrange the visit to the BMW Mini Factory on the 1st April, but no this was the chosen date and he asked for a show of hands.  There was some discussion as to whether a coach would be required but there were insufficient Members to warrant the expense.  Mike did wonder whether his driving was the reason!!!   The visit would be in the evening and would be exclusively for us, there were various restrictions one being that Adrian would not be allowed to wear his high heels!

The visit to the Bus Museum was more difficult to arrange, but it was agreed that we would have a Club run out on Sunday 22nd June taking in a visit to the museum and to a local pub for lunch.

Pete Vielvoye said that there was a static Classic Car Show on the village green at Churchill near Chipping Norton on the 8th June should anyone wish for an interesting day out.
Adrian said that there was a new ‘caption picture’ on the web site reminding Members that there would be a bottle of wine for the funniest caption.

Adrian reminded Members of the external events with Stoneleigh Show being held on the 2nd March and Coleford Festival of Transport on Easter Monday.  There is a diesel meet at Toddington Railway Station on the 25th/27th July and we have been invited to Prescott to attend their Breakfast Meet on the 13th April which is a MG themed day.  Members will however not be able to have a run at the hill, breakfast only!

On the 2nd/3rd August there is a South Gloucestershire County Show in Bristol to which we have been invited but this unfortunately conflicts with the show at South Cerney to which several Members have already committed.

We were reminded that the 27th April is ‘Drive it Day’ which is a National Event, so Members were asked to get their classic cars out on the road.

The Caper is well under way with the start, middle and end being confirmed, entries are coming in and a good deal has been struck for overnight accommodation at a 4* hotel at the Cotswold Water Park.   We are in need of raffle prizes and adverts from any local company and if all Members could secure just one advert each it would ensure a generous donation to our chosen charity, Alabare. 

Tony gave us a little more information on the Pershore Plum Festival which is being held on the 25th August, cost is £3.00 per car.  It sounds like a really good day out and should think there will be quite a few Members attending, weather permitting.

Philip Fisher, who has been unwell for quite a few months, was planning to attend the February meeting but had sent a message to Adrian saying that although he was on the mend he could not be with us.  We hope that it will not be too long before we see him again.

The meeting adjourned for the raffle and the Autojumble which had been suggested by Trev and then we had another of Gethins’ quizzes which was won by Mike and Rob with 12 questions correct.  Tim who was not helped by anyone had the booby prize with 4 correct. Many thanks to Gethin for once again taxing our brains.

One last item mentioned by Adrian was that the Club will receive £3.50 for any Member joining the MGOC if our area number of 0702 is quoted.



January 2014 Newsletter No 65


The first meeting of the New Year was held in the small function room as the Boat Enthusiasts had booked our room a year ahead.  It was good to see so many Members arriving but where was our Chairman?   Much to my embarrassment my mobile telephone rang (the ring tone is the embarrassment) it was Teresa our Chairman’s wife saying that he was unwell, coughing and sneezing and would not wish to spread his germs so would not be at the meeting.

Adrian took charge and thanked everyone for coming out on a cold January evening, apologizing on behalf of Brian and also for the fact that we were not in our usual room, stating that these things only happen on Steve’s quiz nights.

As a reminder to everyone Adrian ran through the events for the coming year.  The lunch being organised by Laurence and Jane on Sunday 26th January is at the Clothiers Arms in Stroud at £10.95 per person.  As the pub has two sittings Laurence opted for the second at 2pm which would give Members time to socialise after their eats.

At the February meeting there will be an auto jumble where Members can swop any of their vehicle spare parts or purchase/sell unwanted car items.

Adrian and Rita have arranged a skittles match on Thursday 20th February at the Stirrup Cup Bisley with Eddy organising opponents from the A35 Car Club.  It was suggested that we arrive by 7pm have a bite to eat and then bowl off at 8.15pm.  As Bisley is quite dark at this time of year Adrian suggested that Members might like to bring a torch!

Although August is many months away we need to think about our entry to the South Cerney Show which is over the weekend of the 1-3rd, it was proposed that we attend on the Sunday as usual.

Gethin asked for a show of hands for the BMW Mini Factory visit which takes a maximum of 25 and you need to book at least 3 months in advance.  He informed us that there were to be no photos taken in the plant and no high heels, to which there was many comments.  Two dates were given and Members opted for the 27th February, the charge would be £12.00 per head for the visit and Mike was asked to find out the cost of a coach.

The Bus Museum trip has been put on hold for the time being.

As the Dragon Run organised by one of the Welsh Clubs isn’t taking place this year Geoff may be organising one, for our Members only, so watch this space.

To be in with a chance of winning a bottle of wine for the caption contest, Adrian reminded Members to get their ‘words’ in before the next meeting.

The Caper Committee are willing to continue for this year and Tim Davies has now been co-opted onto the Committee.   Good progress is being made with the Caper which will be starting from the Cirencester Rugby Club with a half-way stop at Kemble Airport finishing at Berkeley Castle or The Power Station.  Adrian had sent out 400 emails to previous entrants and 15 have already sent in their entry forms.  The trial run will be on the 15th June for all those who are helping on the day.  Raffle prizes and advertisements are needed and Adrian asked if Members could assist with these items as usual.  Cost of advertising remains as previous years £30.00 for ½ page and £50.00 full.  We could also do with a secondary sponsor.

Our thanks were expressed to Tony and Jane who organised the Christmas Dinner at the Lilliput Golf Club, which was an excellent evening.  Tony provided music and I believe we have photographic evidence of some Members having a little jig!!!   The raffle was well supported and £100.00 has been donated to the MS Society.  By popular request Tony and Jane have been asked to organise this year’s Christmas Dinner.

As we have a healthy bank balance thoughts have been given to spending some of it for the benefit of Club, we already have a projector and the Committee thought that a PC to link to the projector would be beneficial.  This was agreed by the Club Members.  A very good suggestion was made by Jane for the purchase of a microphone, as we are becoming older it is sometimes difficult to hear the speaker especially at the back of the room, this suggestion was agreed.

David Kear suggested putting flyers advertising the Club on parked MGs to encourage new Members, this was tried some years ago, but will be looked into once again.

Tony recommended a visit to the Plum Festival at Pershore in August which incorporates a car show with food tents etc and Jane suggested Slimbridge by Floodlight watching the Bewick Swans.  This would be an evening event with a meal included, an idea for early 2015.

After the short raffle break Steve gave us his quiz on Gloucestershire, which as usual was very informative.

November 2013 Newsletter No 64


Our Chairman welcomed everyone to the last meeting of 2013 in The Gala Club saying what a good turnout it was,  no doubt to welcome Adrian and Rita back from their trip to Australia.  Brian then said that yesterday, the 13th, had been someone’s birthday and wished Trev ‘many happy returns’ whereupon much to Trevs embarrassment Members gave a very good renditioning of Happy Birthday. 

The Treasurer confirmed that the accounts were in the ‘black’ with £2842.42 waiting to be spent!!

Brian handed over to Adrian for him to run through his very long notes.  He reminded Members of their imminent weekend away in Wales and asked if anyone wished to go in convoy.  There would be a run on the Saturday which Gethin was organising and on the Sunday would be the visit to Abbey Cwm Hir.

Adrian reminded Members that Sunday 24th November would be lunch at The Crown Frampton Mansell where there would be an open log fire!!  Several more Members added their names to the list.

Tony confirmed that the Christmas Dinner at the Golf Club would be £20.00 per head meeting at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm sit down.  Tim was asked if his name was on the list to which he replied ‘he was giving our meal a miss this year to go to a Classier Event’, we think it is his firms’ do!

Adrian then ran through the diary of events for 2014 emphasising that it was only a draft outline and might be subject to amendments especially the dates as he was having problems with these, blaming jetlag!!  He asked for volunteers to organise the Sunday lunches and the Tuesday evening runs which would commence in April, to which he had a good response.  Steve and Marion will be doing a quiz on Gloucestershire at the January meeting so you will all have time to swot up over the Christmas break and Laurence and Jane will arrange the first lunch of the New Year on the 26th January.   So come along to January’s meeting and take part in the quiz and put your name on the list for the lunch.

In Gethins absence Adrian asked if Members would be interested in an evening visit to the BMW mini factory with a 2 hour tour and also a trip to Oxford Bus Museum to which there was a very good show of hands.  Tony then suggested a boat trip through Oxford during the summer months which he will organise.

Chris will be doing his yearly signpost rally but as the proposed date conflicted with St Roses Wheelnuts this will be arranged for another Sunday in April.

The Committee thought it would be a good idea to have the occasional speaker at the monthly meetings and Members were asked by Brian if they had any suggestions/preferences.  As no one had anything to say the Committee will look for a suitable speaker/speakers.

Rita says that we can now obtain a larger size Teddy Bear dressed in the MG kit at a cost of £12.00 each should anyone want one to purchase one as a Christmas present.

The Cotswold Caper is taking place on the 6th July and Members were advised that this was taking shape.  One of the important decisions to be made before Christmas was the choice of charity of which there were three nominations and Brian gave a brief description of each.

  • St Roses Special School in Stroud who take children with severe physical and mental disabilities and who we have supported in past years.
  • The Alabare’ Trust deal with the problems of homeless veterans and is a National Charity.  The first home with 8 beds was opened in Gloucester on the 5th November 2013 and any donations made to this Trust will be specifically for the Gloucester based units.
  • Pied Pipers aim is to improve the lives of sick children by providing equipment in hospitals and at home.
  • After some discussion one of our ex-service Members gave a very strong statement in support of Alabare’ and a vote was taken in favour of this very good charity.  The result being:

    Under AOB Pete Vielvoye mentioned that he and his car would be at the Classic Car Show as a guest of the Octagon Club at the NEC over the weekend of the 22-23rd November and would be pleased to see any of our Members there.

    We must congratulate our raffle ladies, Maureen and Diana, who did a splendid job of fleecing Members, the ill-gotten gains came to £48.00, well done!!

    As there is no meeting in December we wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.


    September 2013 Newsletter No 62


    Brian welcomed everyone to the meeting with a special mention of prospective new members Paul and Margaret Drewett and Les Smith.  He gave apologies from our Secretary Adrian and Rita who were away once again, reportedly waiting in a hostelry on the South Coast for a ferry to the Isle of Wight.  Rumor has it that he and Rita will be missing from next months meeting as they will be in foreign parts, Australia!  Vance and Heather Hopkins from the James Hopkins Trust, who were there to receive a cheque raised by the Cotswold Caper, were given a warm welcome by Brian.

    For the benefit of any new/prospective members Brian explained a little about the Caper and thanked everyone involved especially John and his Caper team, who put it all together.  He said that it had become our Trade Mark Run.  Brian then presented Vance with a cheque for a little over £4,500.00 whereupon photographs were taken of the presentation and also with the Caper Committee apart from Adrian and Rob who were unavailable.

    Vance thanked the Club Members for the cheque and the hospitality given on the day of the Caper.  He also gave a brief explanation of the Trust for new members and for those who were not at the previous presentation.  It provides respite care to parents with incurably ill children who require round the clock attention and they have recently added 24 hour breaks which are in great demand.  Our cheque will provide two children respite care for a year.

    Brian read an extract from an article in ‘Enjoying MG’ written by Cliff Procter of the Hare and Hounds Classic Vehicle Club complimenting us on a very well organised Caper and the welcome he received from our members.

    The Clubs’ finances are still solvent which was a great relief to members.

    Keith and Wendy Lewis’s run  on the 24th September has nine entries, but we are sure that this number will increase as very often Members just turn up on the night for the run and not the food at the end.  For the benefit of new members Brian explained that we had evening runs of approximately 30 miles with a tulip diagram ending of course at a local hostelry on the 4th Tuesday in the month from April till September.  From October to March Sunday lunches were organised without a run.

    We will be going to RAF Cosford on the 6th October the cost is £15.00 per head to cover coach and tour guide.


    Sunday lunch will be at the Fostons Ash on 27th October organised by Trev and Sue and Tony informed us that the cost for the Christmas meal at the Lilleybrook Golf Club on 14th December would be around £20.00 per head.  He is hoping that this year we will have a raffle and said that prizes would be very welcome.

    Gethin will be holding a Quiz at the October meeting which means he will not be able to win the bottle of wine!!

    As there was no other business Mo and Lynn fleeced members for the raffle and the meeting closed.


    August 2013 Newsletter No 61


    I think that Brian our Chairman has been watching too many of the Pointless quizzes on BBC One  as he sounded very much like Richard Osman when he welcomed Members to the meeting with Hi everyone!!  One or two Members were noticed sneaking in as we were about to start.

    As there was nothing to report from Brian and Sue the meeting was handed over to Adrian who said that if Members were thinking of insuring their prized possession/possessions with Lancaster perhaps they could go to the link on our website as we get a small percentage as a commission if anyone takes up the insurance.  Recently a Member insured his car through this site and we were sent a cheque for £6.45, thank you to David Wood. 

    Members going to the Haynes Museum should already have their directions but if going in convoy should meet at the Stroud Leisure Centre at 10.30am.  Their accommodation is in a Public House which serves very nice Cider but no Pigswill according to Tim!

    We are hoping for a dry and sunny day for the trip to Bourton-on-the-Water but a room is being made available to us should it be required.  Those parking in front of the Museum should meet in the main car park at 9.30am with their obligatory picnic.

    Tony and Jane’s evening run on the 27th August will be from the Hungry Horse lay by, map reference and post code was available if needed.  First car away would be 6pm.  The preferred method of payment was up front to Tony which caused a bit of a discussion and it was decided that we would pay cash on the night.  Apparently the Landlord at the finishing venue is unable to cope with credit/debit cards when there is a crowd of people eating!!!

    Mike Hall will be driving the coach for the Morgan trip on the 4th September which will be starting from the Gala Club at 9-9.15am.  As the tour starts at 11am Members will need to be at the factory by 10.30am.

    One of our Members had expressed a wish to attend the Newark Park Show on the 1st September but due to the fact that we would be required to be on site early in the morning not leaving until late afternoon and the only interest there would be a walk through the park it was a unanimous decision not to go.

    The Tetbury Classic Car Show on the 8th September which has been organised by Mr Billington whose wife was Head teacher at St Roses Special School is being well attended by our Members so let’s hope it is a fine day.  It is being held at The Dolphin Hall & Memorial Recreation Ground from 11am-4pm.

    Keith Lewis is organising the last evening run of this year on the 24th September and he says that he has negotiated a discounted meal for Members at the selected pub.

    Adrian mentioned the weekend away to Abby Cwm Hir in November advising Members who were not in the know that this large family home is decorated each Christmas with a different theme in each room.  There are still a couple of rooms available at the accommodation should anyone else be interested.

    Tony reported that the Xmas Bash on the 14th December is all in hand, menus will be available at a later date.


    Steve Wood made the comment that Lynn’s report on our run was excellent and thanks were expressed to Lynn in her absence.
    As there was no response to Any Other Business the girls went round taking money from the Members for the raffle after which Adrian presented us with a quiz and low and behold Gethin won the bottle of wine.

    The Caption Contest was won by our Chairman Brian who is now equal with Gethin having won twice.

    Members socialised once the meeting was closed.



    July 2013 Newsletter No 60


    Brian thanked Members for turning out on a hot summer’s day when most people would have been having a BBQ with ice cold beer!!  Members would have noticed a gap left by the absence of our Secretary who was in Northumbria with Rita (his wife), he had been having language lessons before he went but this didn’t hinder him in sending through loads of paperwork for the meeting which Brian said he would ‘ignore’.

    We were pleased to welcome a potential new lady member Nicky Brown who when asked what MG she had replied a ‘pink one’ much to the amusement of the male Members of the Club.

    Brian reminded Members of the coming July events, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the 21st, Terry and Liz’s first evening run on the 23rd and Pete Vielvoye’s MGs in the Forest event on Sunday 28th which was starting from The Hostelry in Goodrich at 10.30am.

    The events in August are South Cerney Steam Fair on the 4th, a visit to the Motor Museum at Bourton-on-the Water 25th and Tony and Jane’s evening run on the 27th.  Tony said that he had arranged a quirky rally which Terry interpreted as reversing all the way round!  He handed out the menu saying payment would be required before the event.  Tony also stated that he and Jane had once again visited the Royal George at Birdlip, where we were to have our Christmas Bash, but they had found it less than satisfactory.  They checked out the Lilleybrook Golf Club and found the staff very accommodating and proposed that we change to this venue.  There was some mention of 50/60s music which could entertain us through the evening.   Unfortunately we would have to change the date to the 14th December which was agreed by the Members.  Our thanks to Tony and Jane for taking on the organization of the Christmas Bash.

    September sees a visit to the Morgan Factory on the 4th and a few days away to the Isle of Wight later in the month.

    The trip to Abby Cwm Hir to see the Christmas decorations in November is almost fully booked, just a couple of rooms left, if anyone else is interested they should contact Adrian.

    Brian informed Members that the Caper had raised around £4,470.00 and that a huge thank-you was owed to all those who had taken part in whatever capacity.  There had been enthusiastic response from many of the entrants with mentions of a fabulous route book.   We have already received 3 entrants for the 2014 Caper.


    The Treasurer said that the Club Funds were in a healthy state almost £3,000.00 in the account.

    Half-way through the meeting a gentleman tiptoed in and during a lull in the proceedings asked if he needed anyone to propose him as a Member, to which the reply was ‘money talks and the Treasurer would take his together with his details’.

    As we have no speaker or anything arranged for the August meeting, Members were asked if they would like a quiz, so it looks as though Adrian is going to be busy once again!

    Mo and Diana did very well taking £25.00 for the raffle as the numbers were well down, I assume due to holidays and the weather.

    The meeting closed at 20.40hrs.


    June 2013 Newsletter No 59


    I doubt whether anyone noticed but there was no Newsletter in May due to the fact that the majority or should I say all of the Committee apart from John Rose were away on various jollies, but I understand that the speaker gave a very informative talk on the Industrial History of the Forest of Dean and that there were questions and answers afterwards.

    There was a little confusion which was immediately sorted when we arrived at the Gala Club.  For some reason we had been relegated to the small room once again, but the young lady on the bar soon sorted it out for us and we quickly set up our usual room for the meeting.  All hands to the pump!!

    Due to the fact that our Chairman Brian had a better offer from Helen Mirren for the evening our Secretary Adrian conducted the meeting on Brians’ behalf, firstly handing over to Sue who confirmed that the Club cars now numbered 48. 

    Adrian then listed the forthcoming events.  Richard Wards run on the 23rd June only had 2 entrants and he was wondering about cancelling but 9 more members said they would be attending.  Steve was asked if he would like to plug his teddy bears picnic which he declined but then went on to run through the details briefly for those who were not present at the last meeting.  Terry and Liz are organising their first run in July with the start at Barrow Wake, the same as the Teddy Bears Picnic, finishing with an Indian meal.

    Pete and Derricks’ Forest of Dean run in July can either be weekend or day depending on the Members choice.

    The MG Club is organising a 40th Anniversary get-together on the 13th/14th July at Swavesey in Cambridgeshire should any Members be interested.

    There will be an excellent attendance at the South Cerney Steam Fair on 4th August as 14 cars are already booked to go, let’s hope for a sunny day.

    Adrian and his dates seemed to be causing a problem and on several occasions Rita had to help him out although at one stage looks passed between them as if to say ‘I know what I am doing’!!

    We were pleased to welcome David and Elspeth Kear who recently joined the Club.

    John gave an update on the Caper saying that the route guide had gone to the printers whereupon Rosie corrected him saying that it was printed.  She has inside knowledge.  We have 163 entrants with several more interested and whereas most Clubs seem to be struggling with their numbers we as a Club as doing very well.  Volunteers helping on the day are to be at Stow Rugby Club at 8am.  John thanked everyone who had donated prizes for the raffle, if there should be anymore they could be taken to Stowe on the day.

    Marion and Steve were presented with a certificate at the Mountains and Valleys Run on the 9th June in recognition that our Club had the most entrants and Adrian said it would be put in our ever expanding trophy cabinet.  Trev had been bullied into arranging our cars at St Roses Wheelnuts Show and for his efforts we were presented with yet another cup for the best display.

    Peter Vielvoye won the Caption Contest and was handed the usual bottle of wine.  He said that his sister does car paintings, as in portraits of same not spraying them!  She had painted and framed a picture of his MG for his birthday which he brought along should anyone be interested in having a painting of their car or any other favourite item.

    Tony thanked Steve and Marion for organising the weekend break to Llanerchindda Farm in Wales, which was enjoyed by all Members, in fact there are plans afoot to revisit in 2015. 

    The meeting closed at 20.30 hours but not before the monthly raffle with Mo and Diana taking £40.00 from the Members present.



    March 2013 Newsletter No 57

    We arrived at the Gala Club to find that our usual room had been set up ready for the presentation to be given by Vance Hopkins.  There was a full size screen and the table had been put in the right position for the projector, which had been purchased for occasions such as this.  At last weeks Committee Meeting the projector had been ceremoniously taken from its’ box and plugged in and to the delight of the Committee it worked, thus ensuring that there would be no red faces on the night of the presentation.

    It was good to be back in our usual room after being relegated for the last two months, first to the bar and then the small room.

    Brian opened the meeting just after 8pm stating that we were secretaryless (not sure whether this is a word, but if not we could adopt it) as Adrian was in London, but he had been in touch via email giving Brian a long list of instructions for running the meeting so he would not forget any important items.

    As Vance had already connected his laptop to the projector Brian said that the presentation would be before the Club events and introduced Vance to the Members.

    Vance expressed his great appreciation to the Club for choosing the James Hopkins Trust as the Charity for this years Caper and said that after we had seen the short video he would take questions from the members.  James, their son had myotubular myopathy and died in 1989 at the tender age of 20months, not from his condition but from an infection which his contracted.  However his short life was not in vain as in his memory the James Hopkins Trust was set up. The video gave an insight into the help and support which is given to parents of children five and under with life threatening diseases making their lives a little easier to cope with.  Nursing care is 24/7 with 1,000 hours respite care per month being  given at either home or at the centre which means that the caring parent can even take on a little job if only for a couple of hours a day giving them time to themselves.  Vance pointed out that all money raised goes to the Trust and is not swallowed up as in the larger organizations.   

    A Teddy Bear Mascot called Jimmy James accompanied Vance to the meeting and one of ours members suggested that we could include Jimmy in the Caper, perhaps by travelling in one of the participants cars.

    Brian thanked Vance and we all agreed that we have picked an excellent charity to support.

    Whilst goodbyes were said to Vance, Diana and Mo did the monthly swindle i.e. the raffle.

    Brian welcomed new member Andy Hobson and also Tony Rogers, who is a member of another Club but joined us for the evening.

    John gave an up-to-date report on the Caper, saying that the route was nearly finished and that he was looking for volunteers to help on the day of the Caper with marshalling duties.  At this point Trev tried to make a hasty escape.  Raffle tickets would be able to be sold before the day of the Caper as we were covered under the JHT registration and he would be bringing some books to the April meeting for Members to sell.  To date we had 75 entrants from various parts of the country.

    John C was taking names for Sunday lunch on the 24th March which would be at the Oakwood, formerly The Twigworth Lodge which is within walking distance of The Gala Club.  The carvery if chosen would include soup and the salad bar. 

    Geoff had 20 members going on the Wadsworth Brewery Trip on the 6th April and there was room for more.  The trip would include the tasting of 5 beers, unfortunately they wouldn’t be pints!! We were to meet at the Gala Club at 9am.

    Brian informed members that the April meeting would be the AGM and that the present committee, should no one offer their names to be nominated, were prepared to carry on for a further year.  Silence from the floor!

    Chris would be running another navigational skirmish on the 21st April and stressed that it is not as challenging as we think, we had all heard that before, but were still not convinced.  We would need paper, pencil, ruler and Explorer Map 14 and at least one passenger to help.  If we found it too challenging we could bail out and head straight for the Royal Oak at Much Marcle where we would have lunch.  Chris said he would hand out sheets with 12 sets of signpost clues and Tony made the comments that Chris made it sound so easy.

    Geoff and Mandys’ run on the 23rd April will start at The Old Lodge Minchinhampton.

    April seems to be a very busy month for the Club as we also have the St Roses Wheelnuts Show on the 28th.

    At the May meeting we will have a presentation about the Forest of Dean and the Marshals will have an opportunity on the 19th to try out the Caper route.  Woodys’ Welsh Wander will be held over the weekend of the 24-27 and Eddy and Diana will give us details of their run on the 28th at the next meeting.  Eddy did make the comment that we should all bring sleeping bags!  They have the reputation of getting lost on the evening runs, so anything could happen on their run!!

    South Cerney Steam Fare is in August and the Club will be going on Sunday the 4th, anyone interested in attending should let Adrian know.

    The trip to RAF Cosford will be on the 6th October, details will be giving at a later date.

    There was no other business so Brian closed the meeting at 9pm where after the members socialized.




    January 2013 Newsletter No 56

    Brian thanked everyone for foregoing their romantic valentines evening to attend the February meeting in the cosy room which we had been allocated for one month only, we would however have our usual room for March.

    Apologies were received on behalf of Lionel Teague whose wife had only recently had a stroke and was in hospital.  A speedy recovery is wished for her.

    The finances are in a healthy position with £2,391.86 in the bank.  No one offered any suggestions as to how it should be spend which was a surprise.

    Tim and Louise will be holding their Sunday lunch at The Pilot Inn Hardwicke which is Tims’ local.  I don’t think we will get any favours though!!  They were only interested in the numbers dining as ordering of food would be when we arrived at 12.30pm for 1pm sit down.

    Adrian and Rita will be away for the March meeting which will include a presentation by Vance Hopkins on behalf of the James Hopkins Trust which is our charity for the 2013 Cotswold Caper.

    Young John C will be organising the March Sunday lunch but he didn’t want to speak about it, saving it for the next meeting.

    The AGM will be in April and anyone wishing to stand for Office should let the Committee know well in advance.  There was no immediate rush of hands.

    Mike Pollock had to step down from organising the August run and as there were no volunteers Tony and Jane gallantly came up trumps.  I believe that Tony already had the run in hand.

    As there was a good response for a visit to RAF Cosford Trev will be looking into organising a visit in October possibly using coach transport instead of cars as we did with the trip to the MG works.

    St Roses Wheelnuts Show is on the 28th April and we have been allocated our usual spot under the shelter of the trees.   Adrian asked for a show of hands to which there was an enormous response.   We trust that this year’s show will not be the washout it was last year and that the sun will be shining for the whole of the day.

    The Rotary Club of Chepstow are organising the 10th Wye Valley Run on the 4th May, anyone wishing to attend forms can be obtained from Adrian.   The South Cerney Steam Fair is on the 4th August and Eddy reminded everyone that the Coleford Festival of Transport was on the 1st April, which is Easter Monday and would the Club be organising a visit.   The only interested member this year was Len.

    Whilst some of our Members are on the Isle of Wight in September Newport will be holding a show and Adrian had made enquiries but he did not think the conditions of entry warranted the Club paying it an official visit.  The cost was £5.00 each to display the vehicles and being on site by 9am and not being able to leave until 6pm.  A rather long day!

    There is a change of date for Chris and Betty’s signpost rally, this is now to be the 21st April and not the 14th.   We had expected a late visit from Chris but he was obviously held up at work, so details of the rally will be given at the next meeting and also on the website.

    The MG Register Run is on the 14th April which is being well supported by our Members. 

    Due to illness John was unable to come along and give an update on the Caper.  We were reliably informed however that the present number of entries are 52 which is slightly ahead for this time last year.  Advertisements are doing well but mainly due to the efforts of a few members. Steve reported that the run was pretty well done.

    Rita has a new system for ordering regalia, she will now use a form system so that member’s orders will be in ‘black and white’, ensuring there will be no mistakes as members very often forget what they have ordered.

    Pete asked about Woody’s Welsh Wander in May and Steve informed him that there was one bedroom left, but with a shared bathroom.  We all wondered who would be sharing when Gethin came up with the suggestion that it might be a sheep!

    When Adrian asked for venue suggestions for the 2013 Christmas Bash everyone was silent, but Tony and Jane have now come up trumps.  They checked out The Royal George at Birdlip and penciled in a date of the 7th December for us and if there were no objections he would confirm and at a later date, probably August, get the costs and menu.  The suggestion was accepted without hesitation and Tony and Jane will now firm up with The Royal George.  Well done both.  He and Jane will be starting their August run from there, so we will all get the chance to give it the once over.

    Before the raffle Brian reminded Members that the March meeting would be back in the usual room.




    January 2013 Newsletter No 56

    A Happy New Year to everyone was wished by Brian and a welcome to the new style Gala Club meeting which was being held in the bar lounge due to a problem with the booking.  Apparently our usual room had been allocated to another Club but Adrian had now sorted it out with the new Steward, but it will not be until March that we will be back in the room.  The February meeting will be in the room first used by us in our long association with the Gala Club.

    Brian hoped that everyone had survived the Christmas period and in view of the unwelcoming surroundings we would run through the agenda quickly. After asking for the music to be turned off and the door to the adjacent meeting room closed Brian handed over to Adrian who he informed us could project his voice much better than himself.

    Eddy and Diana had booked High Orchard, St Anns Way, Gloucester Quays for Sunday lunch on the 27 January and menus were handed around.  The menu can also be seen on the website.

    Adrian asked for volunteers for the August evening run as Mike Pollock had unfortunately had to drop out.  There was no interest, so the question will once again be asked at the February meeting.

    A coach has been arranged to take members to the Longbridge Factory starting from the Gala Club at 11am.  Members can leave their cars in the Gala car park.  As it is only a hours run it was suggested that we have lunch at Tesco’s before the 1pm tour.  There was some lengthy discussion as to whether the supermarket was Tesco’s or Sainsbury, but in the end someone stated that as long as we could get some food it didn’t matter which one, it might even be Waitrose!!  Adrian suggested that Members who were going should check the website just in case of changes.

    Geoff and Mandy are booking a tour of Wadworth’s Brewery in Devizes on the 6 April.  The tour which will be approximately 1 ½ hours will be at 11am after which we can partake of lunch at a pub.  Included in the tour will be the sign writing studio and the Shire Horses. It should be a good day out.

    Adrian had received a letter from St Roses inviting us to their annual Wheelnuts Show on the 28 April, this unfortunately clashes with the MG day at Silverstone which had to be changed due to the F1 and Bernie Ecclestone.

    There is another clash of dates, our Caper is on the same day as the Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club run which many of our Members have attended in past years.

    Mr Billington, who is the husband of the previous head of St Roses, is setting up a new car show in Tetbury on the 8 September should anyone be interested in attending.

    Adrian mentioned two trips which he is arranging, The Haynes Car Museum a 2 day trip in August and a visit once again to the Isle of Wight in September.  Could he have the names of those who are interested in joining the party.

    The Caption Contest was won, not by Gethin, who I think was hoping for a hat trick, but by Brian.  Well done.

    John reported that we have 15 entrants so far for the Caper and that Steve and Rob had almost completed the route and would be doing a trial run at the weekend.  No doubt the girls will go along to make sure the pubs check out ok.  The mid-stop would be at Batsford Arboretum.

    25% of the advertisements needed for this year were already in and it would be really good to get some more.  There is an official letter from the James Hopkins Trust which can be shown to potential advertisers to prove we are bona fides.

    A delegation from the West Sussex MGOC are booked in for the Caper and wondered if any of our Members would like to meet them for a meal on the Saturday evening.  They are also planning a trip to the Morgan factory and we would be very welcome to join them on the visit.

    Steve has suggested the 21 July for his annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic which was agreed so he will now go ahead with the planning

    A vote was taken that although the bar lounge was not very welcoming to hold the quiz planned by Steve it should still go ahead after Members had recharged their glasses and the girls had held their monthly swindle.  £37.00 was raised which was an excellent amount.

    Lynn who never wins anything in the quiz was lucky this time with a box of chocolates which she placed safely under her chair.  Unfortunately she realised halfway through her nightly sleep that she had forgotten it,   I can only hope that new Steward found it and has put it somewhere safe ready for the next meeting.

    Steve’s quiz was based on Gloucestershire knowledge which was as usual excellent with Members learning quite a lot about their area.   The winners of the bottle of wine were Gethin, Jan, Tony and Jane with 16 questions correct out of 20.  Well done to the winners and thanks to Steve for the quiz.




    November 2012 Newsletter No 55

    Brian, our Chairman, opened the meeting saying that tonight he would have the opportunity to show off his new toy as there were two significant celebrations in November.  A certain lady member has a very special birthday, where upon Brian asked Maureen if he could tell the members how old she would be.  We all wished her health and happiness and a celebration worthy of the occasion of her 80th, meaning not just fish and chips and a pint at the local.  It is also Adrian and Rita’s Ruby Wedding anniversary on the same day and Rita said that they had lasted this long as she had ignored Adrian for 40 years!  For once Adrian was silent!

    It was then Brian had the opportunity to experiment with his new electronic gadget by showing two interesting films.  The first was a trio of Martians singing Happy Birthday to Maureen which Lynn thought could possibly be John and Tony (husband and brother-in-law) with the third one being her. The second was an appropriate serenade to Rita by animated drawings. 

    After all the congratulations we moved on to the business in hand.

    Tim and Louise’s November Sunday lunch on the 18th still had vacancies if anyone was interested and there were still plenty of places for the Christmas meal being arranged by Adrian.  Eddie and Diane are in the process of putting together details for the January Sunday lunch on the 27th and would be taking names and orders at the first meeting in the New Year.

    The trip to Longbridge on the 24th January was confirmed and Michael Hall had provided a quote for the use of a coach operator, the cost of which would be £10.00 per head providing there were 25+ members going.  The decision to make use of the coach was unanimous and Michael will go ahead and book it. 

    Adrian and Rita had had lunch in a particularly nice pub on the way to Bournemouth and asked if anyone would be interested in a one or two night stay at this hostelry taking in a visit to the Haynes Motor Museum, which was undergoing a massive expansion and would be ready for viewing in August 2013.  There were several interested parties.

    There had been a big discussion about wine tasting at a previous meeting which was shelved not just because of the costs and the Wine Merchants had come back saying they would do the wine tasting for free!  They would obviously expect us to purchase vast quantities of wine and this was once again shelved.

    John R gave a progress report on the 2013 Cotswold Caper and said that he had had an interesting meeting with Vance Hopkins of the James Hopkins Trust.  Last year we decided not to risk selling raffle tickets before the event as we did not have a license, but Vance offered the use of their license providing a major prize was shown on the tickets.  This will be a matter of discussion.  The trust had asked and it was agreed that they could set up a stall at the finish.  The start would be from the Rugby Club at Stow-on-the-Wold with the finish at Guiting Power Rare Breeds Farm (Adam Hanson) with a possible halfway stop at Toddington which had to be finalized.  The entry fee will remain at £20.00 per car as 2012. 

    John thanked Philip Fisher in his absence for researching the start venue.

    Rita had the regalia ordered at the October meeting and would members see her after the meeting to pay up and collect.

    AOB – Richard Ward said that his ZR was beyond repair after its’ crash and before it went to the scrapper Members would be welcome to have any bits from it giving a small donation to the Club.

    Pete V had brought along a working model of an internal combustion engine which he had purchased from the Haynes Museum and suggested it would be a good Christmas present to encourage interest in the up and coming generations.  Mike Pollock informed Members that his firm was selling these kits at a special rate of £19.90 plus VAT.   Members showed a great deal of interest in the model at the close of the meeting.

    Pete also mentioned that his YA would be on display at the NEC Classic Car Show from Friday 16th November should anyone be interested.

    Steve has a Gloucestershire quiz ready for January 2013 should there be no speaker in the offing.  He also proposed a vote of thanks to Laurence for organising the excellent trip to the SS Great Britain.  Brian warmly endorsed this and there was a round of applause for Laurence.

    A very entertaining meeting for the final one of 2012 which closed at 20.30.

    October 2012 Newsletter No 54

    Brian our chairman welcomed everyone to the meeting stating that it was a good turn out on yet another wet and windy evening. The main topic for discussion at this meeting would be the choice of Charity for the 2013 Cotswold Caper.  Two local Charities had been suggested previously which were the Pied Piper Appeal and the James Hopkins Trust both dealing with children throughout the county but differ slightly in their aims.


    Pied Pipers aim is to improve the lives of sick children by providing equipment in hospitals and at home and is also in the process of raising money for a new centre to provide amenities.

    Adrian and Rita had paid a visit to the James Hopkins Trust, whose main aim is to provide several hours of respite care per week in the home which is vitally important for parents with severely disabled, life-limited or life-threatened children.  The Trust is also hoping to build a centre which would offer overnight care giving the parents of these children a break.

    There was stunned silence when Brian asked if there were any questions until Richard asked from where we would start the run for each Charity.  The answer was the start and finish was not dependent upon the Charity and a few places had already been looked at this being the responsibility of the Caper Committee whose Chairman would inform us of the details once they were settled.  There was slight amusement but embarrassment on Tim’s part as his mobile telephone kept ringing! Trev not to be upstaged also had an anonymous call!

    Brian asked for a show of hands with the James Hopkins Trust being chosen by 23 votes to 11.

    Laurence said that there was free parking for our visit to the SS Great Britain on the 28th October, Adrian asked ‘do they pay us to display our cars?’

    Adrian then reported that he had received a very appreciative letter from the Star College thanking us for the donation from the 2012 Caper which was used to purchase the vehicle lift for their new minibus.

    No one responded to him asking the question ‘did anyone have any ideas for the November meeting once the matters in hand had been taken care of’ so I should imagine it would be a social chat after the raffle.

    The November Sunday lunch being organised by Tim and Louise will be at the Red Lion, Arlingham, details will be on the web site.

    A visit to the MG Factory at Longbridge was being arranged for January 2013 with two dates being suggested both Thursday afternoons the 24th or the 31st and members who were interested were asked to put their preference on a form which was being sent round.  There would be a tour of this very busy factory including the museum, a glimpse of the shop floor and possibly a look at the new diesel version of the MG!!!  John C asked what type of transport we were using for the visit and he was promptly volunteered to arrange a mini bus.  Joking aside one of our members has mentioned that he could possibly arrange transport should we wish it.

    Adrian had received an email from the Shanklin Hotel on the Isle of Wight which sent Tim into panic mode and he assured us that he had paid his bar bill!!  But no the email was offering another bargain break for next year, although the troop had only just come back.  They would however be avoiding the Bestival Festival next year.

    The Caption Contest was won once again by Gethin and Jane promised to deliver his prize to him!

    Rita had a few new regalia items which were a cap, beanie hat and mug all with the Gloucestershire MG logo, which she would be taking orders for if any member was interested.  There were also Christmas cars available in aid of the James Hopkins Trust.

    Two new Club feather banners have been purchased for use when attending outside events, so that the stand can be seen clearly.  Philip wanted to know if we had to use a balloon to keep them up!  He was informed that the feathers were kept erect by trapping them under the wheels of a car.

    In any other business Steve mentioned that Nigel Scotts Garage in Woodchester gave him a very good price for his MOT and he was willing to give the same deal to Glos MG Owners who presented him with their membership card.  It did however only apply to MGs.  Details will be shown on the web site.

    One last item before the raffle and Adrian’s quiz was the announcement that two Club Members, Nick Easdown and Rosie would be getting married on the 13th October and a card was circulated for signatures.  Congratulations to them both.

    Laurence and Jane were the winners of the quiz and received the usual bottle of wine.



    September 2012 Newsletter No 53

    There was a conflict of engagements for Brian our Chairman but as Adrian our Secretary so nicely put it the food fight won and he conducted the meeting on Brian’s behalf. 

    The main event of the evening was the presentation of the Caper cheque (for which we had all worked hard) to Holly and Harry of the Star College who were accompanied by one other member of staff.  Adrian said that Harry was banned from becoming a member of the Gloucestershire MG Owners Club due to his driving ability, he had never seen anyone move so quickly in a wheelchair!!

    As Holly and Harry were already at the meeting Adrian thought we should concentrate on the 2012 Caper first so that they could leave whilst the raffle was taking place and before the diary discussions etc.  They were however very welcome to sit with us for the duration if they so wished.

    John Rose, Chairman of the Caper Committee was unable to attend the meeting and asked for a message to be relayed which was:

    ‘On behalf of the Caper Committee I would like to thank the members for all of their support, especially to the marshals and pink ladies on the day, without whose help it would not have ran so smoothly and also thanks to Holly and Harry for all their assistance’.

    Adrian then handed over to Holly who said it was nice to be at the Gala Club once again and to see so many familiar faces.  She explained the benefits of our donation which was being used to purchase a vehicle wheelchair lift and the money had come at the right time as they had purchased a new VW Crafter in Silver to which the lift would be fitted.  There will be an acknowledgement on the rear of the VW to the Gloucestershire MG Owners Club, so we will have free advertising from this!  Holly said that as Harry was the expert speaker she would hand over to him.  Harry thanked us again for putting on the MG day with the rally and said that our support was gratefully appreciated by all the Star College as it meant more students could have trips out to concerts at Wembley, Cardiff etc etc etc.

    It was my privilege as the oldest serving member on the committee to present the cheque to Holly and Harry.  Photographs were taken with the only two members of the Caper Committee in attendance, Laurence and Trev, unfortunately Rob and Steve were otherwise committed!

    After the raffle the meeting reconvened (without our Star quests) with one of the questions being asked as to how much we had raised for the Star College.  The cheque handed over was for £3,936.70, but the amount they had received in total was over £4,000.00, which considering we were down on advertising this year was exceptional.

    Mike Pollock’s run on the 25th September was still being held although no one had seen a menu; this was promptly produced by Mike and was circulated amongst the members.  He had arranged for a public house, which is usually closed on a Tuesday, to open up especially for us. 

    As there are no speakers planned for the October meeting and no members had any suggestions Adrian and Rita will organise a quiz!

    There are 31 members going on Lawrence’s SS Great Britain trip and he has suggested that we meet at Gordano Services at 10.15am and drive in convoy over the Clifton Suspension Bridge arriving in good time for a look around the museum before lunch and a history talk. 

    Adrian has no menu for the Christmas meal but turkey and Christmas pudding will be involved.

    Gethin thanked Adrian for the Isle of Wight weekend which was enjoyed by everyone.  There might be a revisit in 2013 but not the weekend of the Bestival Festival which was on whilst they were there this time.

    To close the meeting Adrian read out a joke sent to his computer by Brian which members found amusing.

    The meeting closed at 8.55pm, but members stayed chatting until gone 10pm.




    August 2012 Newsletter No 52

    Hello, good evening and welcome was the opening of the meeting by Brian, who promptly apologised to Members for dragging them in on the third day of summer!  Brian was fighting a loosing battle with the air conditioning in the meeting room so handed over to Adrian as he could shout, but he too had problems with being heard.

    Members attending the Best of British Airshow at Kemble on the 26th August were asked to meet in Greasy Joes car park near Tescos which has been used numerous times in the past.  Yet another early start for a Sunday.

    Brian and Teresa had by mistake double booked for Tuesday 28th August which was to be their run and Laurence suggested using a run from previous years.   Richard Ward came to the rescue which saved the day for Adrian as he was willing to resurrect one of his old runs.   As the 28th is only a couple of weeks away Members were advised to keep an eye on the web site for details of the run.

    September will see the presentation of the Cotswold Caper cheque to the Star Centre, when Harry will come along to receive it.  John and his team were once again thanked for all their hard work in making it such a success. 

    Mikes run on the 25th September is still on, starting from the car boot sale site at Hempsted, details will be given at the September meeting.

    Lathwaites had contacted Adrian offering to come along so that we could have a wine tasting evening, the October meeting was a possibility as we have nothing arranged.  We could taste 10 wines over 2 hours, the cost being £50.00;  Tony made the comment that there should be no charge.  As most of the Members would be driving it was a unanimously agreement that a wine tasting evening was not an option.

    There are 23 going on the SS Great Britain trip in October and Laurence had received the voting from Members for their favourite choice of food, with the Gold Medal going to the Devon Pie, with a close runner up with the Silver Medal of the Chicken and Leek Pie.

    The Christmas Bash has now been booked with the Old Crown at Paganhill and Adrian will need numbers by the October meeting.

    Adrian had put together the 2013 Social Calendar and asked for volunteers to organise Sunday lunches and evening runs with a preference to new members who had not arranged a run before.  Two comparatively new Members, Geoff Wakefield and Keith Lewis put their hands up and were promptly given the task of organising Aprils and Septembers run.  Terry and Liz Heighway who were not at the meeting had expressed  that they would like to arrange a run and Adrian will contact them to possibly take on July.

    It’s not many weeks before the overseas trip and Adrian has been in contact with the Isle of Wight Club who has suggested that they all meet up on the Friday evening, have a run on the Saturday when they will be shown around the island and then a tea run on the Sunday.  Tim stated that he would be quite happy to meet up on the Friday evening provided they paid the bar bill!

    The ‘caption contest’ was won by Rob Panter and as he was not at the meeting I was given instruction to make sure the bottle of wine was given to him!

    It would be good to do a write-up on the Caper for the website and Adrian had emailed Members asking for contributions which he could link together, but so far he had only had a response from two Members.  He re-iterated his request and is hoping that he will receive some more words.  Apparently there was a good write up about our Caper in one of the magazines from the Oxford Club.  Tony asked if Adrian would accept ‘little bits’ from his own involvement.

    Adrian handed the meeting back to Brian who asked if there was any other business:-

    Jane asked if Egypt Mill, where Laurence’s run finished, could be considered for a future Christmas meal as she thought it was a super venue.

    Gethin wondered if a run ending at Whitney Brewery for beer tasting would be an option on either a Saturday or Sunday and would look into details as the response was ‘yes’!!

    Pete came up with a good idea, which would solve all the problems with the write up for the Caper, why not ask a Member to be ‘point of scribe’ from 2013.

    Mo ably assisted by Diana fleeced the Members for the monthly swindle. 

    The meeting had closed when Steve arrived with profuse apologies as he had been a contender with the Olympic Traffic in London.  He and Marion had been to Llanerchindda Farm near Llandovery whose owners organise car and motorbike tours.  The packages are 2 and 3 nights stays with an 80 mile run and 100 mile run on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.  He suggested that it might be a trip for next year and came armed with brochures and a form of interest, which was gradually filling up before the start of the quiz.

    Brian had put together 25 questions for a very varied quiz, the last few questions being cryptic.  The winners with 16 correct answers were David Glews team who received a bottle of wine.

    July 2012 Newsletter No 51



    Brian, our Chairman, welcomed everyone who had turned up at the Gala Club on a wet Thursday evening and promptly handed over to Adrian, our Secretary for a rundown on the social activities as Brian had nothing to report this time.

    The Teddy Bears’ Picnic was fast approaching, 15th July, with the starting point near The Old Lodge on Minchinhampton Common when it was hoped that the weather would be sunny and warm so that all families could enjoy eating al fresco.  Steve stressed that a Teddy Bear was compulsory and anyone turning up without a Teddy would be turned away.

    Lawrence and Jane have organised the next evening run on the 24th July which will start from the lay by on the A38 near The Cross Keys, first car away at 6.30pm.  There was some confusion as to which lay by but Lawrence explained that all details could be found on the website.  He and Jane took numbers and menu choice for the visit on the 28th October to the SS Great Britain asking members if they would like a guided tour which was a little extra per head.  By the response an organised tour will be arranged.

    Adrian had a list of members who would be attending the Stanway House meeting on Saturday 14th July and Tony questioned whether, like so many events this year, this would be cancelled due to the weather.  We had been given preferential parking on a hard standing outside the house so there should be no problem with the vehicles becoming stuck in the fields.  Tony also asked if Adrian would be telephoning all those attending, in the event of it being cancelled, but Adrian explained that as we have a very good web site, members should check this before leaving home.  Terry one of our newer members thought we should be positive, ‘the fountain at the house might be higher because of the water’.

    There had been a poor response to a visit to RAF Cosford, I suspect due to so many events being held through July and August so Trev has deferred this until 2013.

    Two airfield events are taking place in August, South Cerney Steam Fair and the Best of Britain Airshow at Kemble for which the entry fee, as we are entering as a Club, will be £10.00 per car.

    The only members going to Shelsley Walsh this year are Richard and Tim.

    There are no speakers booked for the months of August, September and October and Adrian asked if anyone had any ideas for livening up the evening meetings to which there was silence. Teresa has been nominated to organise a quiz for one of the months.  Members were asked at the June meeting if anyone wished to organise the Christmas Dinner, but there were no takers, the same applied at this meeting, silence, so Adrian had taken the bull by the horn and provisionally booked The Old Crown at Paganhill for the 8th December.  No one had any objections to this, so The Old Crown it is!

    For the past few years we have attended the Llandudno MG run which incorporated a few days away organised by Tony and Jane, but not this year.  A few members were idly chatting after the Cotswold Caper and decided it if wasn’t too late in the day to go on the Snowdon Run staying for two nights in a Travelodge.  Several members were keen and now there are six Club cars attending the event.

    Adrian gave a few statistics on the Caper but felt that as John Rose was on holiday the final figures should await his return.  A rough calculation showed that the preliminary figure would be in the region of £4,000.00 from 143 cars taking part and that the Caper Committee and everyone involved on the day should congratulate themselves.

    Tony asked if there was any feedback on the Cotswold Caper, but was informed that until the Committee had their meeting there would be no feedback.

    Brian mentioned an Open Day being held at Knightsbridge Green, Cheltenham on the 22nd July and being run by a Classic Car sales operator to which we were all invited.  There would be bacon rolls, tea, coffee and music with classic and sports cars on display.

    An email had been received from Elaine of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf thanking all members for contributing £124.00 to the charity, which was in addition to the fee.

    Diana and Eddy ran the monthly swindle after which the meeting was closed and, as there was no speaker, members took the opportunity to socialise
