Gethins Trip to Abingdon

2nd October 2016

On Sunday 2nd October in magnificent sunshine 28 GMGOC members met at the Rose Revived Hotel on the banks of the Thames in Oxfordshire for an outing organised by Jan and Gethin to the Abingdon Museum who were featuring an exhibition of the MG Factory Racing, Rallying and Speed activities.
Tops were off (cars that is) Brian and Teresa just used the air conditioning in their new MG GS and John and Mo sparkled in their new Firefrost Red TF.

At 11.00 the cars left for the first stop in the multi story car park in Abingdon, good news, parking was free! bad news, they had shut the upper floor! a great way to encourage tourists. After a leisurely look around the exhibition and a little play on the scalectrix set leading to some spectacular crashes most people made their way to the cellar cafe for tea, coffee and in some cases cake.

The route back to the Rose Revived utilized the Factory Test Routes taking in all four of the routes used, from the thirties to the seventies, even a short piece of A420 dual carriageway used by the MGB V8's   only at 70mph of course.

Gethin had supplied a colour map of the test routes, a useful addition as a brain fade had  given an incorrect mileage when changing instruction sheets and the map made it obvious where to turn.

On arriving back at the Rose Revived we found that the hot weather had brought so many people out that it was difficult to find a parking space despite the large car park. Peter Gordon and his staff did well to cope and had our food on the table within half an hour of the last couple to arrive.
