South Cerney Steam Fair

3rd August 2014

After going to the Steam Fair before we knew we were going to have a good day. The omens, however, were bad as Greasey Joes had closed down now and the day before rain came down in stair rods. Eleven cars met in the car park and were ready for the convoy to the show. A few moments later and we were on the perimter of the airfield and hunting for the area allocated to us/

As usual the first order of the day was to erect the gazebo. After a short while it was up. A triumph of willingness over experience. It really was a case of too many cooks.... Once up and chairs placed the second order of the day was a bacon butty. This year, however, the Army had turned up with a type of mobile kitchen and were doing breakfast. It seemed churlish to ignore their efforts so most of us indulged.

Sated, we all went off to see the various stalls, exhibitions etc There were so many different stalls ranging from selling cider to M&S seconds. From Car parts to confectionary. As usual there was a lot of doing nothing but chat at the gazebo and the occasional visit to see the Alpacas or other attractions.

All sizes and shapes of car were in abundance and provided hours of entertainment for car enthusiasts.

After a day of doing nothing it was time for the off. The gazebo was easier coming down than going up and it was soon tucked away. Time to leave and we all set off for the exit.

Unfortunately, as the weather was so bad the day before everyone wanted to go on the Sunday and so there were record crowds and that meant record queues on the way out. The average time for us to get out was ninety minutes. It was a little frustrating but even that couldnt destroy what was otherwise a brilliant day.
