Geoff and Mandys Wadworths Trip

6th April 2013

The day started early with everyone arriving promptly at the Gala club for 9.00. We eagerly piled onto the coach with  18 from the club and 4 guests, there were  even a  few seats spare to stash some of the booty from the brewery shop !!

We arrived at Devizes at about 10.30

Upon arrival the staff were waiting and after promptly paying up and were ready for the tour, the only drawback was we had to wear hi viz vests so we all looked like escapees from the local institution.

Becky the tour guide gave us a good history lesson on the Brewery which was founded in 1875 by Henry Wadworth. We were then given a tour of all the floors throughout the building with all the inns and outs of the brewing process , it was clear that the present owners are proud of the history as many things date from a bygone age ( a bit like that suspension on the coach!).

There was a steam engine dating from about 1880 and a large brewing copper dating from 1910 that they use every couple of months for special brews.
We visited the cooperage which is about the last in the country , its surprising to learn that the barrels  can last up to 200 years

We then made our way over the road to the sign writers studio where all the external and internal pub signs are painted by hand, they even use gold leaf on a regular basis.

From there onto the stables to see Max and the other shire horses, who are used  daily  to pull the carts and deliver the beer to all the pubs in Devizes.

Then the best bit, the beer tasting, we had 6 beers to choose from and as many as we could drink in about half an hour, luckily a stampede for the bar didn't materialise and everybody duly waited there turn, even Sue who is an avid real ale fan (addict)

After this a much needed toilet break, then off next door to the pub where we had even more beer and there was a large table all laid up just for us. The food was promptly served and was superb, then time to visit the shop , another toilet break and then we made our way home to the Gala club
in all a very enjoyable day and thank you for all coming along .
